"Gps"

Does anyone have any information about GPS usage in Germany?

I will be going there this summer and would like to see if I could use one of mine to make sure that I get less lost than I usually do.
I have a Magellen and have tried to contact the company to find out if they have programs that I can download for my unit.

Any help would be appreciated.
Henry

Like liefhebber said, see if you can download software from your gps manufacturer, usually free. Otherwise, if you have google on your phone and international roaming you should be good to go as well.

Portable GPS with preloaded Europe maps is the way to go. Tom-Tom and I believe Garmin sell models with both tue North America and Europe maps already preloaded. More expensive to start than plain old North America only GPS, but.... I don't know about Magellen for either additional Europe maps or new units preloaded.

Advantage is that you don't have to pay the outrageous charge they have for loading the Europe map into their GPS which didn't come with it in the first place. If that's what you are stuck with, new GPS units are pretty inexpensive, time to consider upgrade vs. that investment in older technology. Also, the unit with both continents preloaded will probably have enough memory on board out of the box for all of this, you might otherwise have to get another SD card for the extra Europe maps if the North America GPS will suport the extra data in the first place.

I would not drive Europe without GPS, period. The open road / autobahn is fine and easy to navigate but once you get into the city areas, many of the cities are older and have twisted, irregular streets, changing street names, one ways, etc. You really need GPS unless you already know for sure where you are going. Even in the larger more regular city grids, it's just plain easier and safer to have the GPS do the navigation and leave you to only drive, not deal with maps, written directions, etc.

Have fun - I really enjoyed driving Germany and Austria despite the horribly expensive fuel. Try Sixti for relatively inexpensive car rental although that's more expensive there than I am used to here as well. If you step up to a premium car rental, a lot of those will come with GPS. But I found it really helpful to have preloaded my planned destinations into my portable GPS while relaxing at home. All I had to do was unpack the GPS from my carry on, put it on the dash, plug in the power, push the buttons, and drive where I wanted to go. Nice!

You can bankonit.....

I have a Garmin. You basically buy maps either by download or disk, or SD card, and then load them up as needed. SEA maps were something like $125 for the card.

i encountered similar situation while in spain for few days, late last year. unlike you , it didnt cross my mind about gps, untill i got there.
you have 2 more options or rather 3. 1 is, you can try downloading european maps, while still in usa, using any p2p,which is usually free.of course i would recommend using separate sd card. 2 is , if you have smart phone , you can try using that. again, you would have to have a sd with preloaded maps, or gps software. the advantage of it , is, if you smart phone has wifi, you dont have to go tru your cell provider's gps charges. you get your signals directly from the satellites. a small note : make sure your cell phone is charged completely. i noticed , that mine uses more battery life, while in gps mode, then for the reg. talk/text . 3 rd option is, if you have someone install such software on your smart phone.dont know about germany, but im in bulgaria right now, and installing gps software, with european maps on my smart phone, costed my about 30 leva, which is about $22 .
i would go for option 1, since you have time. im using nokia n95,with garmin software, and im still getting hold of it.
another thing is, if you dont mind the charges from your provider, you can use gps + agps.agps works like reg. gps, with the difference that, you get your signals from the cell towers ,which are spread across the town that you are in. the advantage of it is, if you are surrounded by tall buildings, in some small street(like in many older european cities), getting an agps signal would be easier then , a reg. gps signal.
if you do that, i would recommend getting a local cell phone provider, to escape roaming charges.

I have a Garmin GPS, which comes preloaded with European maps. I have used it a number of times in Germany. No way I would drive there without it. However, I don't remember the model #. I paid around $200 a few years ago. If you are interested, inbox me and I will look up the model for you. A friend of mine got one last year through Ebay at a lower price.
