"TJ police stealing from you at the border?"

I haven't visited TJ, and would like to one of these days. But I hear from many sources that the TJ police frisk you down at the border on your way back into the states and will take your money. That is highly disturbing, and would probably be the key reason why I wouldn't want to go. I am a proud person, and I know that if I were to challenge their authority I'd probably get my ass kicked and thrown into a mexican prison. Not my idea of a fun mongering weekend. So how many of you have been frisked and robbed by the TJ police? How does it make you feel? Is there a way to prevent this like hiding the cash in your underwear? What will they do to you if you don't have any cash for them to rob?

I was once robbed by the TJ police of $200. It was mostly my fault.

- Was pulled over late night (Never drive in TJ. Park at the border and take a cab)
- Had a couple of beers (1 is too many beers in mexico while driving)
- Between me and my friend we had $700 cash in our pockets (always hide your money, secret pockets or whatever)

Once they saw we had $700 in cash their bribe amount jumped up... was intially asked for $400 or Go to Jail Amigo, but managed to drop it to $200.

I did get a free escort patrol all the way to Adelitas out of the $200.

It was really bad for awhile but seems to have abated in recent months (I have not heard about it in several months but last year it was a menace-I never had to pay but my friend did). This happened at the bridge where the taxis would drop you off and you would beginning walking the fenced in area back to the border crossing. You could try to avoid it by crossing through the cars lined up for inspection going north and then hopping the 3 foot fence thus bypassing the shakedown spot. ALso going in groups was less risk or going at very busy times (when lots of people were passing by reducing your chance of getting selected).

I have crossed the border about twenty times and this did happen to me ONCE. I did nothing wrong.

I was alone and took a cab back to the border. As soon as I got out of the cab two cops frisked me and took all the money out of my wallet.

Since then, it has not happened but I usually only bring enough money so when I come back I don't have much money left. I also hide the money in my sock.

The location that Surfer and Philly are referring to is known as the Sentri station, the turn around point for Taxis and car pools and such, a drop off point to walk the last 100 yards to the US side of the walking border crossing. That has long been the location of TJ Cops shakedown, especially at night when in the cloak of darkness, they claim they are looking for drugs and weopons. There is usually two or more cops on the shakedown team since they operate w a wingman also.

If you look more carefully, about half of the time, the uniformed cops is not even a TJ City Policeman, they are transit cops or housing authority cops, who are in it for the money. Probably a gentleman's agreement that the TJ cops will share the wealth for the proceeds obtained. Some are armed, others are not.

Latest 411 was that there were a lot fewer incidents of Shakedowns at tne Sentri post, because..... the drug lords could easily kidnap the cops or gun them down, in an exposed area like Sentri (NO place to duck and hide). Also, the TJ Mayor and Police Chief have had SO many complaints, and tourisim is down over 80-90 % this year due to news reports and the violence and the press, they cannot afford another black eye in the media.

The veteran mongers know to cross the footbridge from the McDonalds over to this side, and the foot ramp takes you past the Sentri Post, and a free sidewalk to the border crossing. Other mongers know a back route with certain taxi drivers to get them safely past the Sentri. But again, the Sentri has been fairly quiet of late, for all of the reasons noted above.

Bottom line, cross back into the USA in pairs or larger, avoid Sentri via the foot bridge or weaving thru traffic and cars, or taxi routes, and hide your money and passports in safe locations like money belts, underwear, socks or your jock strap. Don't go back drunk, and have a good time, if you choose to go South for Tacos.

If you are not doing anything wrong including not being publicly intoxicated or carrying any drugs (even OTC), you can challenge their authority if they try to take any of your money. I've been frisked a few times in the Zona, outside the Zona, stopped in a taxi and at the taxi drop-off point, but never let them take a peso.

I stay in the Zona 48-72 hours or more at a time and am often walking alone (or with a chica). No wingmen for me

First, walk with purpose and avoid eye contact (in a taxi wear your seatbelt), but if they call or walk up to you and then want to frisk you (I've been put against the wall before), I grab my money and hold my hands high in the air. When they grab for it, I yell, "MI DINERO," but making sure I have my ID in the other hand for them to inspect. I also tell them, "no tengo drugas" so they know I know that's what they are supposedly looking for. I even had one guy pretending to be a cop and insisted I pay him a fine for not having my ID with me (this was before I realized it was required I walked, he didn't follow.

I carry a card with the word "Sindicatura" written with a Sharpie and their telephone number 688-2810 (Tijuana Internal Affairs). I also have a Sindicatura card that was once available on the Tj Amigos board. They always see this card along with my ID. I look at them closely.

Yes, I also hear stories and see some guys get frisked and their money being passed between the cops. Don't carry drugs (legal or illegal) and you won't have to worry, but also be sure your 'wingman' that is supposedly watching your back doesn't have anything either as 'guilt by association' is not uncommon. Enjoy and be careful.

P.S. For awhile, when there was a lot of publicity about TJ cops "frisking" tourists returning to the border, there were a couple of community watchers at that Taxi drop-off point to monitor the police. These community watchers wore uniforms, carried clipboards and looked official. After a few months, they were gone.

All I can say is FUCK T.J.!!!!!!!
I was stopped for absolutely no reason while driving back from Ensenada a couple of years ago. He tried to say I was drunk. I told him I don't drink. He then accused me of speeding. I told him how could I speed in so much traffic. Then he said I changed lanes without the turn signal. Cost me 15 bucks to shut the little fucker up. Most of Mexico is beautiful in it's own way, but T. J. is full of thugs and cops that are worse than the thugs. This is one gringo who say's -fuck you very much but no thanks, I don't want to spend my hard earned money in a place that lets the cops rip you off!! And all you mongerers better think, are you really getting that much better of a deal considering all the risk you take by crossing that border?

put the money and whatever you don't want stolen (e.g. your cel phone) in your hand when they frisk you, and you should be fine. Be extra careful if there are 2 or more cops. One will hand your stuff to the other, and he will disapear on you!

there is a drop off point that is past the sentri drop off point where you can avoid the cops but most taxis don't know that route since it's a small dirt road.

Yes, I remember one time when I was walking back from the Zona to the border during the day, two Tj cops made me empty my backpack onto the hood of their car. One cop kept moving my stuff around like a shell game. The other cop kept asking me questions trying to get me to look away from my stuff, but I steadfastly stared at my money and cards even as the other cop kept touching my arm to distract me Very funny game they play, but as long as you know the rules, you should come out unscathed.

I have heard some stories, especially about a regular Tj monger (Aussie) I use to know well (supposedly taken for a long car ride), but I haven't been able to talk to him since the so-called incident and he hasn't returned inboxes (on another board) so, who knows :( Third-world countries sometimes have incidents and 38k are killed on US freeways every year.

Educate yourself, be prepared and live your life. Up to you

P.S. Hey, Soc - many times I am in Tj, the SGs ask about you. I guess they still want to be your gf. Watch out for their padrote

I have 2 personal friends that went on that police ride, both were longer than 3 hours. One was taken to atms and had to withdraw money to pay bribes. With the other guy, the cops pulled over his taxi, and when he was asked to step out of the taxi, he saw them throw some fake drugs into the back seat. He was confident of his innocence and went along for the ride. They had him for 5 hours I believe then later dropped him off in a sketchy part of town.

It's funny how good the memories of the chicas are. I pretty much stopped going there for +3 years now except for more recently. My last trip, I ran into a sg that had a big crush on me way back when, and apparently still does as she asked random street people to come up to me to tell me she wants it bad, everything gratis. She's young and cute, has a really tight pussy and does a mean bbbj but is also a stage 5 clinger no doubt.

IF there are TJ cops at the Sentri post, they tend to do their dirty deeds after dark, and look for drunk Americans trying to cross back to the border, but now it is hit and miss if there are any cops there recently. If they stand out there too long, they could easily get shot by the drug lords.... now that will teach them a lesson.

I went down for tacos this weekend and did not see any police issues, but there are a few rogue cops out there, always looking to make som extra cash, so travel wisely. I can report that there was plenty of talent everywhere, the SG were all out there, AB and HK club were busy, Chavelas got remodeled and lots of local girls and new girls hanging out in Chavelas. Chicago was still fairly quiet, they are trying but just can';t seem to compete with the big boys acorss the street. Do not bother with Mermaids, it is a rip off IMHO. Buena suerte.

So I hear that term a lot, "travel wisely", or "watch your surroundings". But the thing is, when something goes down, what can you do? Run? Fight? Nothing, but just have your manhood, pride, and possessions taken from you. This thread has told me enough of what I need to know. I won't be going to TJ any time soon.

You should be aware of your surroundings, 24 hours a day

In the mornings, there are fewer 'witnesses.' I've walked from the Zona to the bank ATMs a few blocks away and I've had some rateros following me to where I cross the street multiple times and sometimes eventually go back into the Zona and return to the ATMs later in the day.

In the morning, I've walked to the border and have had the local policia stop me thinking they might make some extra dinero, NOT.

In regards to the waiting time at the order, there are multiple variables, but usually before sunrise it's not as bad until the morning commuters arrive.

Of course, late in the night, there will be more opportunists of all kinds everywhere. For anyone's initial trips into the Zona, it's a good idea to be given a general tour to acclimate to the Zona environment although sometimes a little adrenaline rush can be fun

For up-to-date and more thorough information about the Zona (but very limited information on other international scenes), check tjamigos.com.

Left TJ at 9am Saturday there was a line over 100 yards long & 3 wide, took about 20/30 minutes to get thru. I would assume too many people for the policia to mess w/ you. I was in TJ for 2 days, operated in the day time and I liked it. There are a fair amount of hotties down there, I was impressed w/ the beauty of the women and those killer tacos. TR later.

It really has quieted down recently.
But for the ones concerned to be as safe as possible, it is best to cross the border when it is the busiest. That is when the people who live in TJ and work in San Diego are in line, ie daytime.

For the new ones, you also reduce your exposure time to the cops and other rateros, by taking taxis to and from the border.
Walking at night is pretty safe in ZN, just don't doddle or look like you are a newbie. Of course don't talk to or go with anybody in ZN somewhere else. Because for one thing there is no other area of interest for us in TJ.

The TJ cops run just about every scam there is.

The good news is that the cops are crooked, the bad news is that the cops are crooked. EVERY cop in TJ is on the take. Most of the time they don't bother you. And the police activity varies with the city administration.

The current admin is trying to clamp down on the cops, and they are fairly calm. I have not been stopped in some time. When Jorge Hank Rohn was in office, I was stopped about once a month or so. But thank god he is gone and the cops, for the most part are not a problem now. Or I should say, they are not bad as long as you do not give them a reason to hassle you.

The good thing about corrupt cops is that if they catch you holding, or being stupid you can buy your way out of trouble.

culo is a culo

I hate the pricks there. Ive been rolled by cops 4 times and they pulled me over just walking on the street and put me in there car, stopped me while I was driving, and stopped me in a taxi always threating me to go to jail while they "talked" to the judge on their radio. I now always hide my money and take a minium and NEVER an ATM card or else they will want you to go to get them money, I take an AMEX card and just tell them I dont have a PIN number. Pricks all of them
