"Have any of you gotten/considered Global Entry?"

Looks like a good deal for frequent international travelers - basically, allows you to skip the lines at immigration coming back in at set airports (including SFO and LAX) and clear immigration (potentially not customs) via an automated machine rather than with the usual agents.

$150 for 5 years, plus some government paperwork. Anyone using it?

If it is goo for more than 1 return airport yes, if it limits me to just 1 airport...maybe...my main question is what would keep terrorists from using this?

It's good at any of the list of US airports, not just your regular one. See link below for the full description.

As for what would keep terrorists from using this, that's what they have a background check and interview for. Whether those are effective, who knows?

What I'm curious to know before putting down my $100 (misread - $150 is for the application to both this and the Canada program, NEXUS) is how invasive the interview will be for a frequent solo traveler to SEAsia?

Also, for those who are frequent TJ or Canada mongers, there are similar programs for both return from Mexico (SENTRI) and entry to and return to the US from Canada (NEXUS - note that this one requires two interviews, one with the US, one with Canada.)

I always fly back to SFO and have never ever had more than a 10 min wait at immigration. Most often its just walk through. IAD and JFK are completely a different story.

I've had better and worse luck with SFO, it's never that bad compared to LAX/JFK/ORD (DFW is about on par with SFO.) Never flow through IAD internationally, but can imagine it's a zoo.

SFO always tends to give me the third degree coming in, which encourages me to take an indirect flight - more miles, too, and often cheaper since the cheapest fares on JAL and Cathay don't earn AA miles.

I always fly into sfo. the immigration wait has always been short. it's the ever more often bad mark on customs declaration form that adds to the process. I have started getting more pointed questions regarding activities in the LOS while at immigration. it's still a relatively fast process; It just requires one to be prepared for the US gov. welcome.

yeah, my first few trips, i never had a long wait.

and then they started giving me secondary searches that lasted 30+ minutes.

and then i had a tight connection once landing @SFO, and was traveling first class, but missed the connection. so i had a choice, wait at the airport 8 hours for the only other flight that day that went to my destination, and fly economy, since it had only 1 cabin, or wait an entire day to make my connection.

so i took a downgrade and waited 8 hours at the airport, because the US customs official decided that the home-made porn of me & my GF (now wife) was worth watching... and he watched it for quite some time.

so i'm sure i'm on more of those lists, and i'll have more searches.

odd thing is... nearly 3 years later, my wife still looks like she's a teenager, yet after the guy watched our porn, he just said "have a nice day" and sent me on my way. yeah, fuck you too buddy. watching that was none of your business, but once you did, how could you not have asked me to prove her age (note: i had copies of her passport & id card with me, for that purpose, but he didn't ask for them)?

anyway, point is, they'll fuck with you one of these days. just because they haven't yet, doesn't mean they won't. your tax dollars and constitution at work.

By registering for Global Entry, you will be marking yourself as a “frequent traveler” who makes several international trips per year.

Maybe not the best idea for a sex tourist???

Just a thought...

They keep all your entries in a database to begin with; this just gives them a background check to go with it. Can't see how it could hurt.

My understanding is that the Trusted Traveler program is not functional at SFO.

I could be wrong, but that's what I was told by CBP about 9 months ago.

I go through SFO customs/immigration checkpoints regularly, I've never seen anyone use the machine.

I also see airline crews go through regularly. Though they do have a separate crew line, they still to get questioned on occasion. You'd think the pilots would fork over some money to avoid the questions. Unless crews are not allowed to use the trusted traveler system?

I recently switched job roles and will be traveling much more, so have just applied for it. I go in for the interview on Monday and will report back. According to my colleauges, it's well worth it and can be a huge time saver especially since you have to clear immigration at the first point of entry in the US and some airports are worse than others in regards to lines. The on-line application takes about 30 minutes.

Global entry is available at SFO. One line all the way to the left. Was not a machine. Had an officer working at the booth.
I go through SFO immigration about 6 times a year and have never had more than 3 people in front of me in regular line. Have no idea about any other entry point.

After a bunch of consideration, I too have decided to go for it. As a pure leisure traveler, sometimes mongering and sometimes with the wiferino, we'll see how the interview goes.

lqqkn4ahummer - how did your interview go?

Update: No problems with approval or interview, although I've got enough recent non-mongering international travel that it probably looked less suspicious than it would have a couple of years back when it was just 6 trips to LOS back to back.

Interview was a piece of cake. Just a PITA having to go to SFO. Handed over both passports (dual citizen here) and did kind of chit chat interview. Been to many countries and only one he asked me about was Thailand. They then take an electronic photo and fingerprints, show you how to use the machine and you are on your way. You are activated in the system 72 hours later. About 30 minutes total time.

Used it to re-enter in Newark a few weeks ago and pretty much a breeze going through immigration, but then had to wait for luggage....
