"TJ travel documents required?"

I have been to TJ several times, but the most recent was well over a year ago. A passport/card was not required to return to the U.S. at that time. I now see on the U.S. State Department web site that a passport/card is now required to return to the U.S. whether in a car or on foot.
Here is where I am confused; I have read in several threads here in this forum that people are still being allowed to cross with only a drivers license and birth certificate.

Can anyone with recent experience please advise as to what the real minimum requirements are? I am considering a quick TJ trip next week with several friends, most of whom do not have either a passport or passport card. Just wondering what to expect if we went with simply drivers license and B/C's?

I had the same lecture a while back coming in from Canada. I told them I thought Canada was just another state and wanted to know when we gave them their Independance. LOL They let me right in.

Thats funny! I always think of Canada is a suburb of the US. Just like the US but cleaner and safer!

I have not been to TJ in the past two years, so I am not familiar with the latest level of security. However, I likely will be making a visit within the next month. So if I understand the recent travelers correctly, there is no need to bother with the hassle of obtaining a passport or border crossing card?
I will not be planning any returns soon, so I see no reason to bother with jumping through any more hoops than need be.

TECHNICALLY it IS required, and they CAN give you a thorough secondary inspection and lectures, but ultimately they WILL let you back in.

Other than 1 trip to TJ no plans to leave America in next few years? I'd shoot myself first! Ante up for the passport and try to see the World man!

True. Take a copy of your birth certificate, and it will make it a bit easier.

Surfer you have been all over the world and yet you still go to TJ. Why?
You always say Asia is so much better.

As a background , I went to Thailand once, great time..granted, but when I add in the time to get there and back, and the cost to travel, the need to stay at least a week, hotel, humidity, and that TJ is 15 minutes from escaping back to reality, I go , no disrespect, why?

When it cums to international poon, I don't think Mexico ranks very high. What TJ has going for it, is it's close by and cheap for us. GFE is not common in TJ

Passport is not that hard to get. I went to a place that took the pic on a digital dedicated machine and set up all the paperwork for a reasonable fee, explained everything to do and expect. Only hairy part is you have to send your actual original birth certificate to the government through the US mail and hope it comes back like it should. Mine did.

I had my CA DL and a copy of my birth certificate. I'm a white guy and the big Border Patrol guy look at the DL and BC, typed a few things into his computer, looked up, and said have a good night. 3 minutes max at the counter. I had no bag with me or anything else. This was about a month ago at 2am.
