"Learning English in LOS"

Has anyone found a reputable place for a Thai "friend" to go to have some English lessons? Nothing exorbitant. Maybe around 2k bhat for about 30 hours of conversational tutoring.

I've done some online searching, but most do not list prices.

So, 2 dollars an hour for conversational tutoring? Do you do your job for $2 an hour?

Well, mabye you do, who knows? Maybe you should just ask for a freebie. Why bother to pay at all????

Did you mean 30 minutes, not 30 hours?

The poster was not asking for a cost analysis of how much was the cost, nor the relative value based upon the US Dollar, he was asking for a cost effective source for his lady.

In Pattaya, there is a local school on the outer section of the city, take the Baht Bus from walking street and uptown past the Big C and further, turns right and goes about one mile, near Soi 33-35 or somethig close. The school is a public school english is taught daily from 9am to 11:30am, it is funded by the Thai Queen and her Dept, to give the local people a relatively free language education. All kinds of folks go to the school, local workers, not just bar people, sales clerks, hotel workers, servers, and I'm certain some providers are mixed into the crowd. All dressed casual, no cost, donations are accepted, the school is off the main drag by one short city block, and there are a few motorboke taxis at the main road, and food vendors gather at 11am to feed the masses. I had a little thai lady attend and she started to learn decent English skills, and virtually no cost, taught by locals, for locals. Looked like 30-40 people per day will attend. M-F only.

I visited the school a several occasions, i was impressed, not fancy, but clean, orderly, no nonsense, and the students seem interested and appreciative. No, it is not a pick up joint, many attending are civilian, is it a school.

The formal English schools ar probaby better, higher price, but if the lady does not practice often and do their homework, the lessons will be slow. I like the intensity of the school described by FH, if you really want to learn to right, it takes qualified credentialed instuctors.

The best way to learn basic English for immigrants here in the USA is for them to watch Seseme Street, it is basic, fun, easy to follow, and it teaches you the basics. Any type of learning cartoons, be it TV or DVD, will teach them English thru repetition and word recognition. Adult learners sometimes need a different approach to being effective.

Good luck, as it appears your intentions are note worthy.

   Thanks for the detailed reply.

Your idea on the cartoons, TV, DVD are pretty good. I may pursue that as an option. My main idea is to get an idea if they are truly interested in learning English. If it starts well, I'd be happy to enroll them in a better/pricier class.

by reputable, do you mean there's a chance they'll learn some english, or there's a chance that the staff won't be 100% white males whose only reason for being in thailand is to bonk your gal, and teaching is their only way to remain in town long-term and to meet her?

you may find the former, but unlikely you'll find the latter.

i sent my wife to aua (http://www.auathailand.org/) on rajadamri road in bkk.

the "normal" english classes were like the normal english classes at the other 18 million english schools around town. 3-10 thai bar girls/class, teaching staff 100% white male expats with no teaching credentials or teaching experience outside thailand, no homework and pathetic curriculum. her "teacher" was constantly inviting his students to the bars @suk soi 24 and suk soi 33 for after-school drinks.

but AUA has AEP (academic english program, geared towards prepping students for studying in the West in schools where the curriculum is taught in english).

when she swapped into that, it was a different story.

both of her teachers in that program were white women, with credentials and teaching experience from before their lives in thailand. she came home from school stressed each day and had 3-5 hours of homework each night, including writing essays on topics she'd just read about in english. reading over the topics, i have to say they were interesting and varied -- it was educational in itself, nevermind the english lessons. the teachers graded her essays, marked them up, returned them and expected re-writes. she was the only thai person in the class, the others were korean, japanese & chinese.

it pushed her way out of her comfort zone, taught her what school should have been about for her before, it was literally impossible for her to speak thai with her classmates... she absolutely hated it, as would nearly 99.5% of thais, which should attest to its quality. was exactly what i was looking for... too bad for her that we ended up moving to the US.

out of your 2K THB zone though. i think it was 8K for the 1/2 course (2 hours/day in class) for 6 weeks, 16K for the full course (4 hours/day in class). there was a free/voluntary lab included for 1 hour/day.

for 30 hours @2K, put up flyers for a tutor around NEP and soi cowboy. you'll find plenty of "teachers."

   Thanks for the reply.

The AUA group looks dang good.

I may have to rethink my pricing ideas.

Does anyone have experience with IH Bangkok for English classes? Their web site looks pretty good. They have 15 week courses.
