"International" is kinda stretching it, after AA dropped their non-stop to Tokyo. I think you can still fly to either Guadalajara or Morelia- not exactly international mongering destinations of choice...

They started calling it the "international" airport when they started flights to Toronto.

I loved that AA Triple 7 to Narita (back when I still flew AA). International in an airport name merely signifies that Customs services the airport-it does NOT mean there are any commercial flights to other countries at all. I have heard the remodel was very well done and hope SFO's of the old international section (which will serve AA and Virgin A) will be just as good when it opens next year.

I took that route when I first started traveling internationally, on my first flight one of our engines caught fire and and had to be shutdown, we landed with an escort of fire trucks. I switched to united short after. Not that they have been much for service...

Scary incident you had but the Triple7 is still safest bird in the sky.

If you live in Bay Area and travel frequently, like it or not United is the FF program and carrier than makes the most sense.

AA in SFO terminal 2 will be temporary - long term plan is to move to T1 to link up with Cathay/JAL/British behind security in the south wing of International (just as United does with its partners already in the north wing of international.)

I also loved the AA service to Tokyo out of San Jose; was very sad to see it go.

I did that route once in 2005. The 777 with plenty of 110VAC outlets was nice, but AA pissed me off big-time and I went back to my standbys, NW and JAL. Too bad, because SJC was only a mile from my office (cheaper to take a cab than park long-term) and the fares at the time were quite reasonable (~$500 R/T).

On another note, JAL just announced service from SFO and LAX to Haneda. Wonder what the fares will be like for that route...

SFO-HND (Haneda) is already bookable for this Dec, looks like about $1200 for some random days I picked (15th returning 20th) and like JAL has discontinued their SFO-NRT service by then. No idea if other dates would find very different fares.

As long as you brought it up- my opinion is that once again, all airport architects must have been selected on low bid. I just took a trip out of the new terminal this week and discovered they have only 600 short-term parking spaces inside; $30/day for the privledge of outdoor parking under the jet fumes. Long walk then to the terminal and then once inside the terminal, long walk again as security is not on central axis of the gates. The old terminal A for the frequent traveller who was willing to pay for a few days of short term parking was far better.

Actually looking around on-line, it seems that international in an airport's name just means that they decided to call themselves "international". Sacramento became an international airport in 1996, when the built the new terminal, even though it didn't get any international flights until 2002, nor was a customs point of entry until 2006...

I kinda agree with you, because the title doesn't have an "OT" in it. But what did you expect with that subject line- how the OP banged the TSA officer during a friskdown? If I wasn't interested in SJC, I just would ignore the thread- or better, start my own with a TR to Asia...

Very easy, but a little time consuming. The VTA operates a shuttle bus between the Santa Clara caltrain station, the airport, and the Metro/Airport light rail station.

Seems to still be free:

Airport Flyer
The free VTA/SJC Airport Flyer takes off for Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport daily from 5:00 am until Midnight - weekdays, every 15 minutes; weekends, every 15 minutes. Catch the Airport Flyer at VTA's Metro/Airport Light Rail stop and at the Santa Clara Caltrain station.
