"Spate of Foreigner Murders in Angeles"

All victims appear to have been long term residents, but still disquieting to say the least. Not reason enough to not go by any means, but it is best to be aware.

Note to THAILOVERS: Please do not hijack the thread by going on about how much safer Thailand is. Nuff said.

Angeles expats fear for their safety
By Ding Cervantes (The Philippine Star) Updated July 24, 2010 12:00 AM

ANGELES CITY, Philippines – Foreigners residing here have expressed “serious concern” over their safety following Thursday’s killing of an American expatriate, his wife and three house helpers in their rented house in a subdivision.

The expatriates plan to put up a reward for information leading to the arrest of the killers, as they bewailed the recent resurgence of attacks on their fellow foreigners.

This developed as police have identified a suspect in the killing of former US Air Force M/Sgt. Albert Mitchell, 70; his wife Janet, 53; and their house helpers Yulberto Vergarda, Isabel Fajardo and Marissa Prado.

Police have also established that the caliber 9-mm pistol, apparently with a silencer, used in the crime was the same one used in the killing of a Canadian national and a Briton and his live-in partner, based on spent shells found in the Mitchell residence.

Larry Heilhecker, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post 2485 based in this city, told The STAR that Mitchell used to head their group.

Heilhecker said Mitchell had resided in this city for the past 25 years. Before he retired, Mitchell was stationed at the former US Air Force base in Clark, which was transformed into a freeport after the US military abandoned it in 1991.

He said expatriates here plan to raise funds for a reward for the solution of the killing, but did not say how much it would be.

He said he and his fellow expatriates want to make sure though that there would be no “fall guys” in the case.

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said an identified suspect eluded arrest during a raid on his house in Marisol Subdivision Thursday night.

“I condemn the killings and I hope they were not perpetrated by a serial killer,” he said in a statement, after probers noted that a caliber 9-mm pistol was similarly used in the recent murders of other foreigners here.

Bautista said neighbors found the bodies of Mitchell, his wife and their house helpers in different parts of their house in Hensonville Court Subdivision in Barangay Malabanias.

The subdivision is a well-secured area where many expatriates reside.

Only last July 6, South African Geoffrey Allan Benun, 60, and his Filipina live-in partner Abigail Henina were found dead with gunshot wounds in their house at the Oasis residential complex, another subdivision catering mostly to expatriates, in Barangay Anunas.

Since last month, a Korean and a British national and the latter’s wife have also been killed in this city’s tourist district. All the cases remain unsolved. – With Cecille Suerte Felipe and Ric Sapnu

Surfer. An update from another site in regards to these string of murders.

The hunt is on for this psycho...
Friday, July 23

An all-out manhunt has been started by every department of police in and around Pampanga to hunt down the psycho killer named Mark Dizon as seen on the photo with this baby.

It would come as a shock to many that such a gentle- and formal-looking young man could have done such crimes.

Station 4 commander Luisito Tan has urged the public to report any sightings of the man or valuable info that could lead to his whereabouts. He further added that the public should still be vigilant until the man is caught, but noted not to worry as it should just be a matter of time until the man is arrested.

Mark Dizon was responsible for the brutal murder of atleast 9 people whilst robbing 3 homes in the past 2 weeks, breaking the peace in Angeles city particulary amongst its many expats. The man is known to have psychological problems and bouts of aggression. He has also been linked to other minor crimes.

The suspect's parents have rejected to cooperate with the police. The parents have been pressurized to help the police, or otherwise risk the death of their son.

If anyone has recently seen the man on the photo or has any valuable info for the police, please contact:
Station 4: 322 2146
PNP hotline: 166

Do you think he's even going to make it to the jail? Or do you think he might get shot trying to escape?

I hope someone can confirm for certain, that his nut has been caught and is in the hands of the AC Police. I would not want to be the suspect as the local Police are not likely going to treat him very humanely, since this is not the USA and he will not get any Miranda Rights read to him, (You have the right to remain silent....)

this is the Phillippines, and if they know he did the deed, and he does not come clean and cooperate and confess... let the torture begin !! Looks like they have some good evidence that this guy is the same murderer from several crimes, he keeps using the same 9mm handgun for each of the crimes - what an idiot !! Shell casings with the same markings - are pretty good evidence in any court of any country....

Let him rot in jail - a life sentence is worse than death ! He can be someone's bitch ....

Angeles 'serial killer' charged today
By Ding Cervantes (The Philippine Star) Updated July 26, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (7) View comments

Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan shows a photo of suspected ‘serial killer’ Mark Dizon that was taken from his Facebook account. By Ding Cervantes

ANGELES CITY, Philippines – Police are filing multiple murder and robbery charges today against a computer technician tagged as the alleged gadget-obsessed “serial killer” of a number of expatriates here.

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said the filing of charges against Mark Dizon, 28, came after pawnshop owners surrendered yesterday a laptop, camera, and cellular phone which the suspect stole from South African national Geoffrey Allan Bennun, 60, and his live-in partner, Abegail Helina, 20.

The bodies of Bennun and Helina, already in a state of decomposition, were found in their house at Oasis Hotel and Villas in Clarkville Compound in Barangay Anunas here last July 12.

Chief Inspector Luisito Tan, head of police Station 4, said at least two witnesses also positively identified Dizon as the one they supposedly saw last July 22 emerging from the house of retired US Air Force M/Sgt. Albert Mitchell, 70, who was killed along with his wife Janet Andrenada, 53, and their house helpers Isabel Fajardo, Marissa Prado, and Yulberto Catli, in his home at Hensonville Court Subdivision in Barangay Malabanias last July 22.

The pawnshop owners told police that Dizon pawned the laptop, camera, and cell phone of the Bennun couple for P20,000 last July 21, a day before the Mitchells were slain.

“I think our local expatriates can now heave a sigh of relief because the suspect has been (identified). We are grateful to them for choosing Angeles as their home and we want them to feel safe and be happy in our city,” Pamintuan said.

Pamintuan said police have also tagged Dizon, who also worked as a reflexologist, as the suspect in the killing last July 16 of Briton James Bolton Porter, 51, and his live-in partner, Melissa Madarang, 22, in their home at Sta. Maria Subdivision in Barangay Balibago here.

Tan said Dizon seemed to have an “abnormal obsession” with gadgets, as he robbed his victims of their laptops and other digital equipment.

Police said laboratory tests also showed that the bullets that killed the victims came from a 9-mm pistol.

Pamintuan said a local court ordered the arrest of Dizon in 2005 for car theft and robbery but he was never arrested.

He quoted reports that in 2005, Dizon also auditioned for a television program in search of new actors.

“It seemed he had known the foreigners who he killed. In 2005, the warrant of arrest cited his alias as Mitchell, which is the name of his latest victim,” Pamintuan said.

Tan said Dizon’s parents were negotiating for his surrender, although plans for him to give himself up yesterday morning did not materialize.

“He is just around. He was recently seen at (a) mall in Tarlac City. Once his parents fail to surrender him, then we will have to swoop down on him,” he said.

Got this from another board.

MANILA, Philippines - Police have arrested the suspect in the gruesome massacre of 5 people in Angeles City last July 22.Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, Philippine National Police spokesman, said suspect Mark Dizon was arrested by a police team in La Union province around 4:10 p.m. Friday.

Cruz said the arrest was made in front of the San Fernando Plaza at the corner of Batagan and Quezon avenues.

Dizon is the suspect in the killing of American war veteran Albert Mitchell, his Filipina wife, Janet and 3 household helpers.

The bodies of the 5 victims were discovered inside their home along Manuela Street, Hensonville Court, Barangay Malabanias in Angeles City on July 22.

Police believe that Dizon was also involved in the double murder Australian national Geoffrey Allan Bennun, 60, who holds a Canadian passport, and his girlfriend Abegail Helina at the Oasis Hotel in Barangay Balibago last July 9.

Investigators also suspect that Dizon was responsible in the killing of British national James Bolton Porter and his live-in partner Melissa Madarang inside their rented apartment in Sta. Maria Subdivision, Barangay Balibago last July 20, just 2 days before the Hensonville Court massacre.

Before the arrest, the business community in Angeles City put up a P100,000 reward for the arrest of the suspect.

A complaint for robbery with multiple homicide has been filed against the suspect

Facebook helps cops nab murder suspect
(philstar.com) Updated July 27, 2010 11:01 PM Comments (0) View comments

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Police tracked down a suspect in a series of grisly robberies and murders with the help of his Facebook account, officials said today.

Mark Dizon, a 28-year-old computer technician, did not resist when arrested Tuesday while talking with his father in a public square in northern San Fernando city, police Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista said.

He is accused of killing nine people - six Filipinos, an American, a Canadian and a Briton - in three different robberies at hotels and homes this month in Angeles city. The area, near the former US-run Clark Air Force Base some 80 kilometers northwest of Manila, is home to many retired expatriates.

Dizon, who is from a well-off family and according to police had a fascination with guns, was Facebook friends with the daughter of one of the victims. A friend of her family showed his photo on the popular social networking site to witnesses to help identify him, police said.

"He was fond of computers and this gave him away," Bautista told The Associated Press.

The string of deadly robberies started July 12, when Canadian Geoffrey Alan Bennun, 60, and his Filipino girlfriend were shot to death after a robber broke into their hotel room.

Four days later, Briton James Bolton Porter, 51, and his girlfriend were killed by a gunman in their house in Angeles' Malabanas village, police said.

Last week, a gunman killed American Albert Mitchell, a 70-year-old World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, along with his Filipino wife, Janet, 53, and three Filipino staff inside their Angeles home, Bautista said.

In the last killing, the fleeing gunman was seen by a village guard and a motorcycle taxi driver, who later described him to investigators, according to police.

After hearing descriptions of the suspect, a family friend of the Mitchells looked up Dizon's Facebook page - the Mitchells' daughter was one of his friends on the site. He showed the Facebook profile photo to the witnesses, who identified him as the man fleeing they saw, Bautista said.

He added that the same pistol was used in all the killings, linking Dizon to the other two crimes.

Travel.state.gov website above shows some interesting information. I searched several countries for the years 2008 and 2009 added together.

France, UK, and Brazil show very few non-natural deaths of US citizens for those years.

However, for Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam (in order):

Suicide: Thailand 13, philippines 7, vietnam 3.

Vehicle accidents: Thailand 11, philippines 9, vietnam 4.

Homicide: Thailand 2, Philippines 18, Vietnam 0.

Execution: Thailand 1, others 0.

Other accidents: Thailand 11, philippines 4, Vietnam 4.

Drowning: Thailand 3, philippines 2, Vietnam 5.

Of course these numbers are not adjusted for the number of US visitors to each country, and they are subject to reporting bias.

...I draw no conclusions....

Two would be a weekly average in Oakland, not 18. One hundred per year.

As I read Rogers report, that was 18 homicides in two years in the Phils.

Compared to your one hundred per year in Oakland, or 200 homicides in two years.

Like Surfer said.

   RM,

The chart I showed was non-natural deaths of AMERICANS in various foreign countries. Although the statistics are poor, the chart shows that the Philippines has a relatively high murder rate for US CITIZENS.

In fact there are between 4000 and 7000 TOTAL murders in the Philippines per year, depending on the source of the information.

There were about 150 murders in Oakland in 2006....which is a high rate of course. But this is among the 400K or so people who live and work in Oakland full time, not just foreign tourists. So yes, Oakland is a dangerous place.

Both you and Surfer should be careful in reading and citing numbers without being clear that apples are best compared with apples rather than with oranges or any other fruit.

Suspicious that Thailand may CLASSIFY many murders as suicides to avoid bad press. It seems odd there are so many suicides there and so few in the PI, whereas the numbers for homicide are reversed. Obviously that is speculation, but it definitely seems anomalous And I noted multiple party suicides listed in Phuket on same day. How suspicious is THAT?

All information reported on the internet is subject to verification, and yes, I don't trust the police or justice system in Thailand any more than I trust the police in Oakland....

...one would think that the murder rate of Americans abroad would vary by country, depending on the danger, but that the suicide rate would be fairly uniform from country to country. However, note that the numbers presented are absolute, not rates, so the murder or suicide number depends on the integrated number of American-tourist-days in the country.

And yes, maybe suicide is contagious....gotta watch out for those epidemics....

In response to message #17

LAST EDITED ON 07-Aug-10 AT 08:17 PM (PST)

Post Philippine Syndrome (PPS) has been known to cause erratic behaviour, mild to severe depression, and may lead to sudden outbursts with no apparent reason. PPS is caused by a sudden change in culture when returning to the USA from a stay of over 1 week in Angeles City PI.

WARNING: PPS can be aggravated by returning to work.

Symptoms include: Night sweats, sudden emotional feelings, morning Priapism, mild to severe anxiety, uncontrollable loitering at Banks who employ hot Pinay tellers, Carpal Tunel Syndrome caused by inordinate amounts of chat time. A few cases of impulsive over use of xoom or western union have been reported.

Treatment: Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption has reportedly had some success but there is a serious risk of relapse when confronted with either an authentic brown San Migue bottle or Jose Cuervo Gold tequila. Left untreated the symptoms will fade on their own after several years (10 or more) since the last visit but risks of serious and uncontrollable relapse remains for the remainder of the patients life. As of this date the only remedy shown to reduce symptoms to a manageable level consist of....going back!

Ah well, I thought that since we had started out comparing apples with oranges so to speak in your original post, the whole point was really a sort of general feel for things rather than accurate conclusion drawing.

Or at least that was how I understood it given your own disclaimer at the end of your post, plus the fact that comparing rates like this is almost impossible. (Just one frinstance is how do you compare deaths in one country where the people may be concentrated in a dangerous area with deaths in another country where the stats are taken over the whole country, or how do you compare death rates where, as pointed out elsewhere, different authorities have different criteria for classifying murders vs suicides?..the list goes on).

I thought you were posting a list of apples vs oranges for the legitimate purpose of putting some perspective on the whole deal.

Obviously, taking an overly critical view could say the whole thing is subject to so much interpretation that they draw no conclusions at all.
