"Navigating in Republic Of Colombia"

I have reserached the archives and have a quick question for the fellow RB'ers

1. What is the best way to travel within Colombia.

a) Bogota to Cali
b) Bogota to Medellin

I prefer not to fly. Is there alternate safe transportation. I am not really looking for comfort but want to explore the culture too. Thsi is my first trip and any info will be helpful.

2. If any of the fellow RB'ers have some conatct of anyone speaking english I will be obliged if you could share that information. I am also looking for recommendations of people who have recently visited these places for hotels/hostels/apartment recommendation

As far as, hobby is considered I beleive the information available on this site is just XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. If any one wants to pour into the allready overflowing glass please feel free.

Thanks for all the input...
AA.

I'm going to MDE in a few months, and everything I've read about Colombia suggests that anything other than flying between cities can be dangerous -- this includes posts on other sites by guys who go to Colombia all the time. There's a few hotels in MDE that cater to folks with little/no Spanish, but you'll pay the obligatory Gringo tax, for both the accommodations and in-house talent. Check your inbox for lodging info...

I stayed at this place last year. It was a brand new high rise condo (20th Floor) that had a view on Monseratt (mountain) and downtown Bogota.

It is fully equiped with washer and dryer microwave oven and a fully functional kitchen. It also has a phone and Wi-Fi.

It depends on how long you stay. I paid $38 a day.

The bus isn't so bad these days. Many people use it.

in my Colombia phase about 5 years ago, you ALWAYS flew. Now, security has returned in large measure so land travel is less risky IN TERMS OF FARC (but the dangers of the road remain omnipresent, not a small danger given frequency of drinking and driving and Latin machismo when behind the wheel). Flying remains MUCH safer statistically speaking.

The road to the coast from Medellin had a particularly bad reputation for mischief.

Depending on budget, I liked the FourPoints which is adjacent to Oviedo Mall (Poblado). Used to get it for about $70 but with appreciation of the COP etc im guessing at leasta hundred by now. A few blocks over is Mercure (European chain)which I also used and like. The cheaper place was called like Plaza Rosa, forgot exact name as it has been so long. Try the lonely planet listings is my suggestion.

For BOG you must be careful what area you stay in. I suggest staying VERY close to the Atlantis shopping center on Calle 86. DO NOT get a hotel on a Calle lower than 80!

As a first timer with limited Spanish skills, you might consider Cartagena instead of Cali or Medellin.

In Cali I like Torre de Cali, run by DHL group from Sopain. Cheapera nd right in the action is the Hotel Don Jaime, about $40 but a bit older and noisy.

PS Im impressed you spelled it correctly. Shows some research.

Thank you for all your inputs.

I originally hail from a developing country, so I am well aware of the risk of travel by land. I was more concerned about the frequency and time to travel. I am sure travelling by air is safer and it is more likely that I will be travelling by air, just because I can't speak spanish, I was weighing my options.

I will be Columbia for the labor day weekened with 2 other friends. I will post a review after I return.

Again thanks a lot for all the inputs.

@Surfer,
I did consider Cartegna, but my friends voted against it . We are kind of a adventure freaks... I probably should ahve mentioned we do plan on hobbying but we also want to see the place and live the life of Colombia

For adventure I'd place Parque Tayronna TOPS in Colombia. Best scenery too. Can fly from Medellin to Santa Marta then an hour by bus to the park.
