"Planning my first trip to South America"

I can only take my long vacations (due to work restrictions) in March or April for two to three weeks. My first trip last year was to Thailand for two weeks and this year I went I took a three week trip to Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. I LOVE SE Asia but I would like to see more of the world while enjoying our hobby as well.

I am thinking of a two week trip next spring to South America. I know I want to spend 5-7 days in Brazil (Rio) and am considering Columbia, Peru and Argentina for the final destination. Would like some thoughts and recommendations from the RB brotherhood.

Thanks in advance!!

Phillyman

Brazil is no longer a bargain monger destination. They are almost in par with US in monger prices although there are still bargains if someone can explore in the more local scene. If one sticks to more tourist oriented places such as termas in Rio or boate scene in Sao Paulo, it will be substantially more in costs than SE Asia for sure. Although Brazil scene is not as good as 5-10 years ago because of prices and less customer friendly attitudes, it is still worth experiencing one time IMHO.

Most excellent phillyguy! Asianprince is correct about Brasil no longer being any bargain, but it is so worth it.

If you want to maximize the amount of girls you meet, you should stay at the apartment of Brasil Specialist, a guy who has lived there for ages and rents out his spare room to mongers. Can tell you more by PM if interested. Not sure what he charges nowadays.

As for the other country, Colombia and Peru both have their pros and cons. WHEN would you go, what is your budget, how is your Spanish, and what do you want to do besides chasing skirt?

The latin scene is quite different than Asia and gogo bars are few and far between. The scene is less visible and less in your face. But the music and dancing is so much ahead of SE Asia, and the girls are more passionate, but it is also much more dangerous.

Buenos Aires is the most impressive city, has the most european culture and best food (although Lima is an epicurean paradise that is way underrated)but is more costly and girls are less GFE. If you like light skinned blondes then BA is your place.

Surf, could you educate us on what "more dangerous" means in SA?

I"ve heard about the pickpocketing, but you must be referring to something else.

YMMV on this score. The single MOST GFE provider I have ever been with in my life was a lady in Lima that I was set up with by an American living in Lima who goes by the handle David_33 on another forum. She was an actual art student in college and a genuine nymphomaniac. If she had returned my e-mails after I got back to the states, I probably would have returned to Lima to try and marry her.

I've been living in Buenos Aires a few months now and have to say the mongering is quite nice. If you are into backdoor it is a lot more prevalent here. 1 hour GFE can be found for 300 pesos (roughly $80). There are furnished temporary apartments that can be rented for a few days (or weeks). And, the nightlife here goes well into all hours of the morning. That, and the city is worth checking out as well. There is a very useful local website (in english) if you are interested in the url PM me.

The biggest cost will be the flight, they are getting rather expensive.

Actually, you can find half hour GFE for well under 100 Pesos in Privados.

The budget is not a big concern...I want to pick the best places to go first and then I will worry about my budget. I normally don't care about high end hotels. Just a nice clean room in a good location works best for me.

I don't speak any Spanish but I may have one or two guys coming with me that do. It will depend if we all can go at the same time.

$80 for ST in apartments now in BA? That is double what the rate was 5 years ago when i was there. The owner of ISG jackson has a board dedicated to argentina www.argentinaprivate.com

Oralio: I meant the rate of violent crime is MUCH higher throughout Latin America than it is in Asia.

I would guess that except for Rio, LatAm city crime must be comparable to American inner cities, yes?

depends which part of the inner city. I was fine in the beaches in Rio but even the street outside of our five star hotel in Sao Paulo was not considered safe, in face one of our co-workers was robbed at gun point a month after I left on that street. This was about 4 years ago so I don't know how things have changed by now.

Okay...looks like our destinations have been picked. Will spend a week in Rio and a week in Buenos Aires. Will be doing some research on the pay international sites in the next few months.

Any advice on places to stay in both of these cities? Hotels vs renting an apartment? There will be three of us going.

Any help will be appreciated.

for Buenos Aires, Recoleta or Palermo are the only areas to consider if you are going to rent an apartment. If you plan on being in BA for at least a week, then IMHO, apartment rental is definitely the way to go. I rented a great 1 BR by Junin and Vicente Lopez - which is a highly desirable neighborhood 1 block from the Recoleta Cemetary (a major tourist site in the city) for around $375 a week from a company called BytArgentina.com.

There are some good hotels in the Puerto Madero and Centro areas as well, which is much more in the downtown areas. But my experience was that any decent hotel in BA will cost at least $80+ a night, more typically $100+ a night, whereas a good furnished 1 BR apartment can be rented for well under $400 a week. The main issue with apartments is you need to leave a security deposit (often as much as 1 week's rent) and you need to pay in cash.

In the recoleta, is it easy and convenient to find all three meals nearby?

IF I rented an apartment, I don't think I'd want to do any committed grocery shopping or cooking.

Very easy. With the apartment I rented, there were more than a dozen restaurants within 2 blocks. Ranging from McDonalds to a fancy Steak place, an inexpensive Steak place, to at least 4 Italian/Pizza places.

I just wish there were more Asian places to dine in BA. It's mostly Steaks and Italian (most Argentinians are of Italian decent).

I agree that Rio has definitely changed but it's still a trip you have to make at least once in your life. Brazil's economy is booming so your dollar doesn't go as far and it's not really for the budget traveler anymore, but hands down Brazil has the finest, most friendly, and most exotic women on the planet. And as far as variety there is no competition. When you want a 5-star meal you don't eat at McDonald's just because it's cheaper. That's how I look at Rio. Yes it's a lot more expensive now than it used to be, but hey it's still worth every penny especially if you have the money to burn. check my blog for a lot of good Brazil travel tips at http://www.brazilgeeks.com

I just returned from Fortaleza, Brazil, and it's got an active bar (help-like) scene with hundreds of girls every night. Fun city, overall, too. Prices are generally R100-R150 for a couple hours (TLN available with some). I met up with Bijou of ISG and had a great time. Biggest issue with Fortaleza is accessibility from the US. If you're already in Brazil, it's easy to get to.

I'm thinking about Lima, Buenos Aires, and a return to Fortaleza this winter -- as long as my job situation allows.
