"Where would you choose to live for 1 year?"

LAST EDITED ON 10-Aug-10 AT 04:58 PM (PST)

I may have an opportunity to be transferred overseas for a year and if so will have my choice of countries to be sent to. Possible destinations are: Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Singapore. Bangkok would be my #1 choice but there's a waiting list to go and I'm nowhere near the top of it. For those of you who have travelled to these places where would you go?

Things to consider: Wherever I am sent I will be furnished with my own private apartment plus a modest salary (approximately $20,000 US). My only expenses really will be food and entertainment. Also, I will partake in P4P once in a while if it is available, but I actually would prefer having a steady civilian girlfriend (I am in my late 30's, educated, in excellent shape, and have no trouble dating women in the States).

My criteria in order of importance:

1) Cheap, healthy, and savory food options (street food stalls).
2) Opportunities to meet and date quality civilians.
3) An interesting cultural milieu.
4) Quality P4P options that are reasonably priced.

This would be my first time living overseas and I love Asian pussy, so I've got a pretty big hard-on for the idea right now. Your opinions will be appreciated.

Ahem, is it $20,000 a month or $20,000 a year? I don't get the "modest" salary here. Either 120K/yr. to enable one to live like a king in a 3rd world country OR 20K/yr. which is still pretty miserable EVEN in a 3rd world country...

Anyway if assuming that I earn 120K/yr. I would choose Singapore based on your criteria. Among the choice Singapore is the most advanced and closest to the first world countries:

1) Food will not be the cheapest among the choices but will probably be the best and most sanitary as well as healthy.
2) Easily the best of the choices since level of education and standard of living is the highest.
3) Certainly is an interesting cultural milieu with a population mix of variety: Malays, Chinese, Thai, Indian...
4) Singapore is probably the worst of the choices in this category but then again if you make 120K/yr. you can easily hop on a plane for an occasional vac to the PI or weekend getaway to LOS.

Last but not least one more criteria I believe you should also be paying heed to: SECURITY! Don't want to start a flame war but I just thought it seems Singapore is the safest place of them all because it has low crime rate which is probably because the standard of living is higher. Singapore is well-known for being very harsh and intolerant of crimes as people have heard not too long ago. I don't mind taking chances for a short trip but if I'm going to be living in a foreign place I'd think very carefully about this criteria.

Of course it's just IMOHO so others please feel free to disagree!

PS: I envy you bro!

I'm sure he can speak for himself, but 20k a month is 240k a year, not 120k a year...and I'm sure he's not considering that a modest salary.

20k a year (even with an apt paid for) "is" a modest salary almost anywhere you live (to me at least). But I guess if he's just going for a year, he can gut it out with that salary plus free housing.

I think both Kuala Lumpur (just been there once) and Singapore are not cheap, but I'd certainly pick Singapore if you can do it financially, but that's just me.

I'm sure Surfer can give good ideas on where one might reside in Manila; it wouldn't be my choice.

The salary is actually $400 to $500 weekly, depending on a variety of factors, so $20,000 is a conservative estimate. It could be closer to $25,000. It is a modest salary, but when you consider that I won't be paying rent and utilities it seems more than livable. From what I understand you can eat cheap and well from food stalls in most of these places. Plus I don't drink alcohol very often, so it's not like I have to support a party lifestyle. I might indulge in the occasional bargirl or massage parlor, and if I date civilians I will take them out for the occasional high end night on the town, but other than that I'm living like a monk.

Anyway, I'm sure I could live comfortably in Phuket, Manila, or Kuala Lumpar. I understand, however, that Singapore is pretty expensive.

I forgot you said Phuket. That'd be my pick. Since you have accomodations paid for, no wories there so it's just anything else.

Kuala Lumpur is a nice city, but probably harder for find a civilian gf or "P4P' for that matter.

I would have said Singapore until the money clarification you made...I'm afraid even that total amount would not keep a civie gf in Singapore happy.
I might vote for Kuala Lumpur - good hub for Singapore or Thailand travel weekends when you save enough, some action to be had nearby, cheap eats can be had, etc.

Street food stalls ?

My info might be outdated, but street stalls in some third world asian countries weren't very intestinally safe in the food dept. several years ago. I know singapore is a cut above, nonetheless...

Has that changed? Are street food stalls generally safe in 3rd world asia these days?

Before you discuss anything, my thoughts would be the package you can negotiate. Are you going to be paid on a local contract or as expat? Are you talking your current salary and a bonus of 20-25k or are you saying that you will live on 25k total (gross before taxes) for all expenses over the course of a year?
FYI: That salary for a long term assignment seems extremely low especially with the tax benefits (I've never had the opportunity to stay overseas long term and partake in the offshore benefits.)
• Home (Are they willing to pay for retention of your local housing be it rent/mortgage/storage? and how does get computed into the moderate weekly salary of $500)
• Housing allowance (you say it's paid -- but what kind of housing??? What utilities are included, a/c, hydro, electric, phone, satellite, internet if needed?)
• Transport allowance (are you getting a car and expenses including CBD fees and parking? Can you opt out of car and use cabs and MRT?)
• Fly backs??? How many and does it include family and friend visits?
• Medical & Dental
• Biz Travel and Accident insurance
• Expenses and Reimbursement (if applicable)???
• I suppose some of this is determined on the industry as well, right? (working for a hotel chain and offered a suite and food is different than a tech company where you may be required to entertain vs publishing or media where you might go on a freelance basis)

As for the rest, it depends on your lifestyle preferences and what you're doing. (well that and whether you have the option to go in the red for an offshore opportunity)

---

I don't have much experience with either KL or the PI. There is an expat population in both and you can find a friendly GF. Costs are cheaper than HK and Singapore and KL has more infrastructure.

---

Thailand

If on Phuket, you will probably get island fever and you're not that close to anywhere. If you think you could live on Kauai for a year on a more lazy pace, then Phuket might be a good option. You can get cheap food and getting around should be pretty good if you negotiate a transport allowance to avoid bhat bus mafia. Another upside is that you can do the TG and Farang vacation girls. I guess the biggest issue might be the housing allowance. Housing is cheaper on the south end of the island and perhaps you have choices in Phuket Town.

Bangkok is Bangkok. It's fun, expensive (or cheap depending on how you roll) and has a lot of expats. However, it's filthy without a major sewage system and the rats are more populace than the stray cats. You also have that issue with peoples' nerves being on edge until a new PM and "that other issue" (HRH's health). GFs are going to be expensive. Negotiate a car to go along with Skytrain/MRT. There is culture and places to go however how much culture in foreign language can you handle? How many Muay Thai tourneys and LB cabarets can you attend? How many trips to Pattaya?

*Another thought for LOS is the fact that internet is hit/miss periodically throughout the day.

---

There is no way I'd do Hong Kong on 25k USD per year. It's far too congested and expensive.

---

My next comment is completely contradictory to my last.
Singapore is fun, clean, with a HUGE expat population. English is primary language. There is a plethora of cultural options from symphony to museums, galleries, and cheap eats. Logistically it's roughly . . .
• 5 hours to Mumbai/Delhi
• 6 to Inchon
• 7 to Tokyo
• 8 to Sydney
• 4 to HK
• and 2 to BKK.
The home airline and airport are arguably the best in the world. Transport is prevalent, cheap and prompt. IMO the most trustworthy cab drivers in the world. Also obtaining a work permit in Singapore is relatively easy, especially if you can start a small business. The problems with such a low salary in Singapore are simple . . .
• While hawker stalls are prevalent, clean and the food is amazing--you're not going to eat in a 'real' restaurant for that kind of money.
• You can't afford Jumbo for Chili/Pepper Crab and XO Prawns on that allowance.
• Clubs are also out of reach.
• While I know you prefer civilians, your p4p options have just been reduced to Chinatown, Geylang, perhaps some 141 shops and Bintan. IOWs no OT, no Brix, no Chijmes.
• Beer-expensive
• Wine-more expensive
• Liquor-extremely expensive

**As a bonus, you can connect with female expats and SPGs.
Also, you might be able to find a friendly Filipina maid/nanny on a Sunday afternoon at Lucky Plaza and that other mall (don't know name and haven't been).
The re-development and expansion of Sentosa might afford some other options in terms of entertainment and cheap drinks in the casinos.
(Highly doubt you'll see much p4p in the casinos in Singapore.)

Given the length of my replies, I'm pretty sure you can guess that Singapore would be a preferred option (if money were no problem). That 25k is tough almost anywhere. Maybe if you can pick BKK and actually live in Rayong, East Pattaya, Sattahip or Na Jomtien. (Commuting to BKK would be an issue if your job requires being in an office but if doing the telecommute thing--no issue other than phone and internet which as I understand can be an absolute pain.)

Thanks to everyone so far for your responses and I appreciate the concern about my modest salary. I don't want to go into the specifics of my job situation and salary, so for simplicity's sake let's say I will be paid $20,000 to $25,00 untaxed, housing and utilities will be provided (not a housing allowance) at a location within walking distance to my work site, and I will not have to cover any expenses at home. It's truly $400 to $500 US dollars per week, cash, with all expenses paid except for food and entertainment. From what I've heard elsewhere it's enough money to live comfortably (and even save a few K) in all of the places I listed with the exception of Singapore.

My main concerns are: Where is the cheapest and tastiest food, and where is the cheapest and tastiest pussy (civilian and/or pro).

Note to Oralio: I've heard from friends who've travelled Asia that the food stalls have the best, healthiest, and cheapest food (if you know how to spot the good ones).

Personally I would go with Phuket, yeah it's not a major city and you can get island fever that is if you don't like to dive. There's tons of diving other islands to explore and the food is cheap and tasty.

You will also have a good chance at getting a civi gf, something that's going to be pretty hard to do in Singapore. If money was not an option I would also say Singapore but with that salary I think your best bet is Phuket. While I liked manila in small doses there's no way I could put up with it for a year, Bangkok is a ton of fun but again the low salary takes away a lot of the advantages.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

Tell them to go shove their offer and stay home. 25,000/year is not enough to live in Cincinnati, let alone SEA, or anywhere else.

If you do go, do not allow them to provide your housing, or you will probably end up in a shit-hole. Insist on a separate payment for your cost of living (which should be at least equal to your salary), so that you can make your own decision about where (and how) you live.

You will also have to pay taxes to Uncle Sam, unless you spend the entire year living outside the U.S.

Gonna have to agree with nativeson here - $25K is a joke even with living expenses included.

Not to preach but I would pass on the job. I don't know what you do (you say you are educated - I hope in something that makes money), but get a decent job in the states and live it up on one or two trips a year.

You're in your late-30s? Now is the time to start earning the big bucks, socking it away and getting experience. Your 20s are when you fuck around and don't care about money.

Maybe others disagree but I can only speak for myself: I had plenty of fun in my 20s and lasting into my late 30s. I was working sporadically, taking a ton of trips all over the globe, banging chicks, and not worrying too much about money (though always keeping what I thought was a decent reserve). Boy, I was living the life.

Then I woke up and realized having a measly $100K in the bank didn't mean shit. Now, a few years later, I'm working my ass off running a business hoping to retire with enough to enjoy my 50s.

But, hey what do I know? That and a buck sixty five will buy you a coffee at starfucks. Maybe you have some sort of safety net you didn't mention (wealthy family, inheritance coming, etc.) and, in that case, heck, why not? Go ahead and enjoy a year of your life scraping by, eating street food, buying beer at 7-11, and banging peasant girls. Could be the best year of your life.

Listen, friends, I didn't come here asking for financial or career advice. Frankly, if you can't live comfortably in a 3rd world country on $25,000 per year cash and a free apartment then I'm not going to take advice from you on money, life, women, or anything else because our lifestyles and values are worlds apart. If I take this job I will not only live and eat well, but will plan to bank a minimum of $500 a month and use that money when my year is up to spend three or four months back-packing around SE Asia.

If anyone has opinions on the four criteria I listed in my original post I would appreciate your chiming in. Again, cheap tasty food, hot savory pussy, and cultural milieu. I've got the rest of it figured out.

Not sure why people are saying it's impossible. I agree, it's not a great amount of money for a western job, but $2000/month for living expenses is more than enough. You will easily enjoy your time in either Bangkok or Phuket. I lived in Bangkok for more than a year making less money and I had to pay for my own housing.

In both places, the farther you get from the tourist areas, the cheaper things become. Also, the comforts of home become harder to find.

The rainy season in Phuket would probably bore me. But I experienced the rainy season in Bangkok and since it is a city, there are things to do when it rains. Phuket is more of a tourist area, so the rainy season means it gets really dead.

Enjoy.

Let's not obsess too much on advising him on his financial decisions.

He DID say 25K nontaxed or after taxes, and rent paid, so that tells me his pre-tax income would be something closer to 43-47K. Not a fortune, but in the ballpark of asian workability, no?

With perhaps the exception of Singapore it's certainly do-able with the other choices.

The OP took out Bangkok himself so it boils down to just Manila, Kuala Lumpur or Phuket. Don't know about others but I wouldn't visit a Muslim country even if they pay me so Malaysia is out.

Which narrows it down to just Manila vs. Phuket!

For myself I would probably pick laid-back Phuket over urban hustle-bustle Manila.

I wouldn't rule out Singapore- other than housing, most other services are pretty cheap here. Certainly street food is no more expensive than any other place in SEA, and clean and tasty.

Likewise, the public transport is great, plentiful arts and other cultural events, and very English friendly and a good place for your first experience of Asia.

Drink and clubbing is expensive, but there are plenty of locals who make salaries of US$2K a month, and you would certainly have appeal holding a US passport...

Singapore is a hub for many low cost airlines, so easy to fly to neighboring countries and if you plan ahead, tickets are cheap.

P4P options for US$25 - US$70 are plentiful, so while not as cheap as other parts of Asia, certainly affordable on a $400/week entertainment budget. The longer you are in a place, the cheaper things get.

You didn't mention medical- are you getting insurance as well?

In my mid-20s I taught for a year in Singapore. We made under 30K a year after tax but they paid for most of the housing ( I paid I think $300/month ). It wasn't glamorous but very liveable--3-person shared flats with a bunch of other teachers. Some others opted for single flats but were making more like 40K a year ( more experienced teachers ). I saved almost $10K that year because food is really cheap and you don't really need a car; many locals don't have one. There are plenty of taxis as well which are pretty cheap for the occasional late-night back. I had a great time on that salary, and blew almost all my savings on travelling. I still went out 2x a week and never really thought that much about money. I wasn't into p2p at that point however. This was circa 2000 but I'm sure you can do it...
