"Loi Krathong - Pattaya or Bangkok"

I've managed to just miss Loi Krathong on prior trips but have never been there for holiday - this year I will be there for the night of. I had initially planned to be down in Pattaya for that day, but was wondering what people thought about where the best place to spend that night is. For Pattaya, the celebration is along the beach, no? How about Bangkok - where would the best place to see the festivities be?

Almost anywhere along the river is good, the Nontonburi Pier is good, and the Queen Sirikit park beyond/next to Emporium is also a favorite spot. If you are really in terested, the really nice spot to see it is in Sukhothai, but that is like 4 hours north of BKK.

IMHO it is a lovely time to be in LOS, perhaps the very best (with Songkran being the very worst). While Pattaya's version is surely not as "Thai" as the Sukhotai celebration, I doubt there are tons of bargirls in costume up there like you see in Pattaya. (: Will post a few pics of this when I get home.

Only bummer is if wind is onshore the kratongs do not float out to sea but end up strewn as garbage along the waterline. On a river (which has two sides) you could avoid this problem by choosing the side where the wind was offshore. Can post pics of that too LOL

Thanks both. Given that I fly in the day of (barring anything coming up where I an take extra vacation time), I don't think Sukhothai (best done with a LT girl, I'd imagine) is a good option this year.

Queen Sirkit park or one of the Bangkok piers (although Nontonburi looks like it'd be a fairly long taxi ride?), much more manageable. Should be fun, either way!

I definitely agree that Nov is the best time I've found in Thailand although I think I've usually been there earlier in the month - a bit concerned that being there for T-day week (esp since it is also Loi Krathong) will be a bit too high-seasony for my taste.

Don't know about BKK, but I was in Pattaya last year during LK, and it was awsome!

Sukhothai is good alone or with, it is a great place. Nontonburi pier is a bit of a hike, and the traffic is bad there at night, best to leave early. A few years back, they had live bands, food, beer, and Muay Thai, dance shows, fashion shows etc...worth the ride.

If you want the best head to Sukothai. The festival for Loy krathong is not to be missed. You can catch a flight at nite from Don Meung to Phitsanulok. Head to the Pattara Resort http://www.pattararesort.com/ Brand new resort and a great place to stay... Sukothai is about an hour away from Phitsanulok. You can arrange with the hotel to have transportation to Sukothai and back for you. Best thing would be to have a lady waiting for you at airport and take her with. Book one of the pool villas and let the fun begin. Stayed in the villas in April this year and they are some of the best rooms I have stayed in anywhere in Thailand...

Avoid Pattay for this festival. Its a cheap imitation of the real festival.

As to songkran that is one of the best festivals to experience if you have never tried it. It can even be enjoyable in Pattaya if you know where to participate...Basically away from all the drunk ahole tourists.....and party with the thais....Nothing better then seeing all the low cut, tit hanging out girls as you soak their white shirts and get a few numbers....

Agreed: Sukhothai is the very nicest place in Thailand for Loi Krathong.

Note: best to book hotel NOW, they fill up quickly. Also best to book flights on Bangkokair.

Second note: finding local talent during Loi Krathong might not be easy. I went last year with my TGF (photo attached). We had a wonderful time....and great fireworks at the old city.
