"Which is the most rat free?"

I've been to indonesia, vietnam, hong kong and a couple others. I've only lived in indonesia, and that place was swarming with rats. I imagine vietnam would be too, but I only spent a few nights there.

I'm pretty sure that singapore is mostly rat-free in public, but PI? LOS?

How about south america? How do lima, BA, santiago, quito, etc compare?

Singapore has great water treatment to go along with the sewer and waste management system. No real problems.
Scratch BKK off your list (and I would seriously advise against a cat for protection).

Just where are you planning on staying? If it's the local shanty town lol.. then of course you'll see rats. At the higher end hotels I doubt you will see a single rat though you never know with the Philipines. If you are going to AC, stay in the better hotels. Lewis Grand or the ABC.

Peace.

This thread reminded me of a classic Python comedy bit:

Waitress: "For dessert, we've got Rat Pie, Rat Pudding, Rat Cake, Rat Souffle, and Strawberry Tart"

Customer: "Is Strawberry Tart the only thing you've got without any Rat in it?"

Waitress: "Well, the Strawberry Tart has got a little bit of Rat in it"

Customer: "How much is 'a little bit of rat in it?' "

Waitress: "Five"

I have stayed plenty of times in the Royal Amsterdam, and seen nary a mouse. Must be all that pussy.

The LG is close to some open space, so might be potential to be more 'ratty' than you think. Though I am pretty sure there are none there either. The management there gets good reports.

However, if anti-rattedness is your criterion, the better hotels in Fields are no problem afaik and any hotel with a german/dutch/swiss owner is likely to be fanatically anti-rat.

Plenty of more economical options than the LG if you don't want rats.

I suspect that they might end up in the local soup anyhow.

I think you're onto something there.

Actually, my question was half-serious. For those of us who are considering living in those places for retirement or other reasons, such things are worth consideration. There's a lot of talk about how fun many of the places are, but having lived in one segment of the third world, I saw rats in expat restaurants in the dining areas, in my expat compound house, yard, and not only at night. Similar with roaches....all tropics have them, but some areas can control them better than others in expat frequently areas.

Yep,

I live (when not on holidays) in tropical Australia. If you go out at night when there are not many people around, they pop out of the street drains, despite efforts of the local councils.

Short of nuking them, it is more a matter of controlling them, and preventing them from getting in your kitchen. So a fanatical cook is your best asset.

There are only 3 animals who have really benefited from there being almost 7 billion people on his little planet: the dog, the mosquito, and the rat...They'll remain our most thankful companions for as long as our species lives.

I'd take issue with the mosquito - they can do fine on pretty much any warm-blooded mammal, and our massive reduction of their rainforest habitat has certainly cut into their domain. And if Bill Gates has his way, they are going to be significantly moredownsized as a species within the next generation even if the deforestation stops.

I saw a big fat rat yesterday in Singapore, just outside a well-known expat place in Dempsey. Basically they are everywhere, regardless of country, eradication technique, or policy.

Mosquitoes- I think Singapore's doing a good job attempting to kill those off. Weekly fogging of the street and compound, along with mosquito police coming by every few days, looking for pots that can accumulate water, etc. I haven't had a mosquito around the house in months...

Looks like a large rat has just entered this thread. Fortunately, it's an old lame one, so it's not one anyone need care about.
