"Hostage Killings in PI"

Surprised to see no mention of the bus hostage incident in the Philippines on the forum.

A few buddies and I are headed to Manila and AC in Oct for our cherry trip. I've traveled the world and know to keep my eyes open for trouble, avoid dark streets, etc. but is this something we should take into consideration? Do any of you AC vets ever hire security or take extra precautions (i.e. ABC Hotel's armored mini bus)?

Apologies for being a worry-wort but this is our first trip and I want it to be epic. I've read too many of Surfer and Biker's awesome posts to turn back now. Got a little discouraged after reading about the closing of LA Cafe and the raids in AC (no more body paint?!)and now this.

Appreciate any insight or advice.

Higgins

In my opinion you don't need to hire a body guard, or hire security, or take any extra precautions. Your largest concern I feel would be fending off the beggars, fending off the street peddlers whom agressively sell viagra, cialis, cialis gels, sunglasses, belts, wallets, watches, dvd's, knives, lasers, cigarettes, and Pacquio tshirts, etc. I seen the same guys out there everyday, they don't leave you alone, hehe. Keep aware of pickpockets. Have fun, hope you have the time of your life. Time flies there, don't waste a minute, hehe. I will be in ac for my second trip, Sept 14 for a month or longer. Anyone want to meet up? I'd like that, please inbox me. Thanks, angelesrookie

This is a lone gunman. US has gun slain almost every month; someone went postal.

There are other things to worry, like keeping a hardon for prolong period of time for all those sweetie.

This is right on. I actually think the body guards draw attention and make you are target. As for the peddlers don't pick anything up or let them put it in your hand unless you are going to buy it. Just let it fall to the ground if they try to put in your hand. Walk slowly and don't gawk at everything like it is your first time in the big city and you will be fine. The vast majority of the folks are very friendly.

There is a reason why Chevron hires two armed bodyguards for every employee they send to the PI for work. And the bodyguards won't let them go to certain places.

And dats why Manila especially is not my cup of tea.

I wonder if I'll ever go back to the Phils. I kind of doubt it. It's hard to erase the memory of getting forcibly pickpocketed/robbed..whatever you wanna call it... outside of LA Cafe. And the experience of having 4 or 5 of the urchins clmging to me while I tried to get in a cab outside of LA Cafe wasn't too pleasant either.

There's so many other places I've been to and prefer more and other places I've yet to see. Who knows? Perhaps some day.

If you're gonna go, I'd skip Manila completely and go somewhere like AC...although I don't see why one wouldn't just go to Pattaya..so much nicer, imo.

Speaking of LA Cafe, is it open now??

Nope LA cafe has not reopened. Amazonia across the street has filled the void but it is smaller and not as much an in your face scene.

Angeles rookie's description and advice is accurate IMHO.

I'll be there in less than 48 hours, dirty and dangerous as it is, and to quote a hero of mine Maxwell Smart, "and LOVING IT!" (: But first, One Night in Bangkok (hum the tune).

Yo enry (as in Higgins), the PI is bloody fine so chill. Leave the bodyguards to Chevron LOL Just get the car from pacific Breeze Hotel to meet you (2500 Pisos, $55) at the airport and head straight to Angeles. Worry about riding MUNI, not riding a jeep on Fields ave.

Word is LA reopened in July then abruptly closed...sound familiar? I'm texting my Sabang contacts as LA and Big Apple are one of the same to see whats going on. I was in LA Cafe in May a couple weeks after the election and the "dumbies" were at the front tables on the right when you enter keeping stats...obviously something was in the works. As for bodyguards...if you want a dollar sign tatooed to your chest then be my guest.

Third world countries are great for hobbying, but police are corrupt and incomptent, as shown here. Mexico cops are the same that come to mind.

Bart cops aren't much better...I maintain we are at higher risk here than there.
