"1st Trip to Philipines; Suggestions Needed"

   Hi Guys:

A buddy and I plan to go to the PI in October. First trip for both of us there. Both of us have been to Thailand before. Both of us are in our 50's.

We are thinking of spending about 2 weeks and planning to go to Angeles for 4 nights; Baggio for 2 or 3 and either Cebu or Boracay for 2 or 3 nights. Neither of us likes to spend more than 4 nights in any one place at a time. That leaves us another 4 to 6 nights; which we will play by ear. No interest in spending much time in Manila.

Some questions:

Best place (website) to check out hotels? How is Agoda? The Wild Orchid in Angeles looks nice, but a bit pricey at $100.00 US per night. Any suggestions for a place around $50-70 in a good location near action there?

Is it recommended to rent a car to drive to Baggio? Any thoughts on this? Doesn't sound like there is much action there. Best to bring your own girl there?

Between Cebu and Boracay, which is better for action and some snorkling? Can you drive to either (cars on a ferry)? Is this recommended? I read there are lots of girls and action in Cebu; probably have to bring your own girl from Angeles or Manila to Boracay.

The purpose of this trip is to monger, but also see some sights.
Any thoughts or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can give you a couple of suggestions.
As far as Baguio is concerned, you can take an aircon bus from Cubao in QC. The bus will make a couple of stops on the way, it is aircon and a pleasant enough ride. Once in Baguio taxis or foot travel will suffice. There is not much action there, although there is a club with some action called "Baguio Angels" right near downtown, and a massage parlor with a full menue called "Secret Place a short taxi ride from downtown. There are also several small KTV bars in the area where something might develop. Other than that, it has lots of trinket shopping. I would suspect that a gal would love to be brought there.

The only other reason I could see going to Baguio is it is just a few hours away from Angeles, so might make a good side trip and break from your mongering. There is a bus terminal in Angeles that will take you to Baguio.

for what its worth,

tav

Pacific Breeze Hotel in Angeles will fit your criteria..off Fields a short distance so quiet....in the price range...great location.....decent rooms....Google it....I think I booked direct with the hotel as I recall.

Fields is correct. Pacific Breeze will flll your needs...IF you can get a reservation for one of the Jacuzzi-less rooms; otherwise you will be paying considerably more for the deluxe rooms.

I have been to Boracay and loved it....but some don't due to it being an upscale resort island well known and expensive. I would not hesitate to go again but there is no P4P that was obvious so unless you bring your own you should consider it a place to chill and enjoy the glorious natural surroundings.

If mongering is a consideration you might want to look into Cebu---much info on the web regarding same; I have not been but am very tempted....

Subic/Olongopo is another possibility; spent a couple days there this past year and found it quite pleasant. Plenty of bars/clubs to occupy you for a day or two and very low-key and relaxed. You won't be swimming in Subic Bay so pick a hotel with a generous sized pool!

Have a great trip!

October is the peak of typhoon season so don't expect good weather and DO expect travel interruption and hassles. The good news is prices are low, flights and hotels empty (except in Angeles which is not very weather dependent). Pacific breeze is a good choice for firsttimers and those who want to stay right in the middle of the action and in a hotel where 99% of your fellow guests are mongers.

Forget driving in the PI. Nuff said on that.

IMHO nobody with a clue goes to Baguio for the action. Some would say nobody smart goes there this time of year when the weather more closely resembles Seattle in winter than a tropical paradise. The bus ride from angeles will be about 6 to 7 hours.
Today is the first day that it has not rained much of the day in the last week (I am on the coast just down the mountain from Baguio).

The reason many of us PI experts hate Boracay is not that it is "expensive"but because it is so overdeveloped now and, where hordes of foreign tourists congregate, leeches will follow. If you like Phuket you may love it there.

Again, it is now in the heart of the rainy season so dont go to Boracay expecting much sun or beach weather (and there is little other reason to go). The snorkeling and diving is mediocre even in good weather.

Cebu has MUCH more action and much better weather this time of year. Snorkeling can be great if you are willing to travel about an hour and a half from the city.

If you want snorkeling close by to girlie action go to Puerto Galera. search for Rogers reports from there. Subic has the girlie action but beaches that look like Texas and the snorkeling is shit (I would not get in the water anywhere in Subic Bay personally).

   surfer,

I'm planning my trip (Oct 1-9th) to PI. I was looking to visit Boracay again. so you recommend Cebu over Boracay? you also mention weather is not as good with typhoon and all... what other island do you recommend or just don't come to PI?

Everybody rolls their own way but here is my ideas...land in Manila and hop a flight directly to Cebu for a few days...I was there a few months ago and not knowing your budget I stayed at Waterfront (Lahug) for $85+- w/breakfast....plenty of good lodging choices in Cebu and the freelance and bar action is great...the malls are full of freelancers...just order a coffee and they will roll by with a glance...it's on...find one you like (club, mall, sales girl, front desk clerk lol) and take her with to Bohol over night.. this will handle your beach and snorkel craving..back to Manila for a night..Manila Bay Cafe...mall freelancers...massage places etc...then to Angeles...I only say do it this way due to the weather and also if you're success rate is good in Cebu from what I understand about Angeles (going soon for first time) the action there will be off the hook...back to Manila for one more night of bliss and come home with a smile on your face..this may seem like a lot of moving around but is a good sampler..adapt your own variations..you may also consider Puerto Galera for a side trip from Manila (plenty of action...Sabang for snorkel/diving and action...White Beach for beach time...there is action everywhere in PI but it takes a few trips to know how to find it and at the same time keep yourself safe in the more remote areas which also happen to have the best beaches etc...for your first trip stick to the tried and true.

Bohol over Borocay for beaches. Fly in to the capital, Tagbilaran, or take a 2 hour "fast ferry" from Cebu. Taxi to resorts on Panglao Island. BYOG.

Thanks to Longgun for starting a great thread and to all the RB brethren for the great tips.

I too will be going on my cherry trip with two buddies in Oct. and all the info helps a lot.

We will be in Manila for a few nights. Are the hotels (ShangriLa, Mandarin Or., Intercontinental) in Makati gf friendly? Is there much action on the Green Belt? Have read previous posts about Cafe Havana and the great potential for non-pros. Is this still true?

For AC, how far is the Lewis from most of the action? In terms of value and convenience, is it worth staying at the higher end hotels (ABC, Lewis) or is somewhere like Pacific Breeze good for first timers?

Sorry for hijacking the thread - I know Longgun said he was skipping Manila.

Thanks again everyone.

I like a condotel situation more than hotel. I have found www.baywatchtowers.com to be quite nice and also near the action.

   Higgins,
All the hotels you mentioned in Makati are girl friendly...I'm going to stay at new World Hotel in a few days so I'll report back on that one..it's connected to Greenbelt and same price range as the ones you mentioned...Havana was rocking in July (pricier than manila bay cafe) but alot of freelancers at night..im definately going to hit that up as well and report back...as for AC i'll be a Pacific breeze on Sunday...wheels up in a couple hours...first AC execursion...

Cheers

The further south you go the better the weather in October. No typhoons South of cebu. EVER.

Agree TOTALLY with Bohol over Boracay. A true gem is Camigin island just south of Bohol; harder to get to and less great beaches but foreigners are so rare it is easy to score (NO PRO ACTION HOWEVER) and it is the friendliest and safest place in all the PI IMHO. Looks like Tahiti. The most beautiful island in all the PI IMHO.

For girlie action the first choice should be Davao. Many will freak to learn it is on Mindanao but the area is very safe and it is truly the motherlode for both pros and non pros. But it will seem more foreign and has way less american style eateries and the like than Cebu. Read the ISG for details on action. My preferred hotel is Casa Leticia, ands Apo View across the street is fine too, but if you have bucks to burn the Marco polo is 5 star and girl friendly.

Lewis Grand is an excellent hotel in an excellent location. I actually prefer staying up at that end of town than Lower fields but it is no more than a 10 minute walk to Pacific breeze Hotel/Lower Fields area. ABC will cost you $ per night but is also in a great location.

Was in Boracay a few years ago and there was some P4P. Lots of ladyboys walking hte boardwalk at dusk. My hotel security was more than happy to find real female assistance if I wanted. I did not want though as on holiday with significant other.

Seems you can always find the local talent in almost any city or town in PI around the cock fighting arenas. They hang around waiting for the big "Winners".

Well, Thailand is 100 times better in my opinon, but it's just my opinion. I'm glad some folks like it....keeps Thailand a little less crowded.

Just be careful...I wouldn't have a clear conscience if I didn't tell you that. I was robbed near Executive Plaza (outside of LA Cafe) and that same day saw a knife pulled on a guy right in front of me in that same area.

Surfer loves the place and thinks it's safer than downtown Des Moines at 1:00 P.M. So, different strokes....

Have fun!!

Hi Guys. I was ill so haven't been able to post for awhile. Now recovered and getting ready to leave early next month. Thanks for all the replies.

An update, my friend will be there a couple of days before me so he will be hanging out in Makati. We plan to spend 4 nights in Angeles then go to Cebu and Bohol before heading back to Manila for a last night. We will probably make travel arrangements with an agent in Angeles. Any recommendation for a competent agent?

A couple of other questions: I see EWR mentioned in posts; is this a bar fine? I know the prices in Angeles are lower than Manila but can I get an idea what price to pay. The bar fine includes overnight with the girl and a tip is given for good service. What should the tip be and how does it vary between Manila, AC and Cebu? Are these standard or do you negoiate?

I don't have much game, so would it be best to bring girls from Angeles to Cebu if find one we like? I saw someone list to pay about 1,000 pesos per day; is this in addition to the bar fine needed since the girl won't be working those days?

You guys are a wealth of information and it is very appreciated.

NEVER USE A TRAVEL AGENT! Do it yourself on the web man.

NO WAY you need to bring girls to Cebu from AC; to Bohol yes. Most bars will try to charge the girl "their" 50% of the barfine plus you must make arrangements with her. Negotiate with gifts, cellphone etc more than hard cash if you want more GFE type trip.

Check out cebu nightlife forum online...the info is usually dated but at least you will have a reference of the names of the places...bars, discos etc..stay away from the ktvs unless you're budget is healthy (real healthy)...im telling you man just go to SM Mall or Ayala Mall sit in a coffee place in the late afternoon and when a looker walks by and makes eye contact smile and motion her over..it's that simple..if they're making suggestive eye contact it's on...some are shy to be seen inside the mall with a foreigner so they may walk down a ways and stop...just follow her outside and she will talk there..here is a very good reference: go to the Marriott Lobby Bar in Ayala Center...on the left side as you walk in...sit down at the bar and chances are George will be bartending (the drinks are american prices you've been warned) chat up George a little and ask him about what bars/places are good now...tell him up front you want value not rip off and he will get you to the best current places...a reasonable tip for him and watch him text from behind the bar so he gets his cut from the referral lol...it's good info trust me on this one and market price not rip off..take the girl you like to Bohol from Cebu..they're used to this and make the deal with her..even more reason to find independents as you eliminate the bar bs...with an indy most are just glad to go there no barfine involved..she is going on the chance of future revenue in most cases which is "up to you"...get used to those words you will be hearing them a lot soon.
