"suggestions for tours to south america?"

I'm considering doing a travel tour to some mix of chile, and/or peru, and/or ecuador.

I'm no good traveling on my own when in a foreign area.

Anyone have recommendations for tours or best way to shop tours?

I think old-fashioned walk-in travel agents may have something to offer in this regard. Their time is money, and they don't make much, but you can just walk in and start picking their brains till you get something or it seems time to cut and run.

I spent 4 weeks last fall traveling Chile. Did a lot of driving and flying. things are so far apart and the country so long you need to fly to key locations and then drive. Get a map of where you want to go. Book your tickets for flying within Chile once you are there

Peru was great. Lima is a little rough but fun, the amazon is amazing, I loved Cusco (would go back in a minute)and Machu Pichu was truly amazing.

For Peru I used Latin America for Less and they did a good job. Chile I just went on my own and made plans once I got there.

Well... you might have already considered this, but I think if you book all your flights through a single carrier (as a multi-city trip), you might get a discount. I booked a flight to MDE--with a 4-day stopover in CR--for about $570 RT out of LAX. You can find stuff to do when you get there, providing the hotels you choose have in-house travel offices.
