"Trouble for USC"

LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-08 AT 07:42 PM (PST)

.

Rey Maualuga and No. 1 Southern Cal have no answer for Oregon State and are in a big hole trailing 21-0 at the half.

USC was a 26 point favorite.

if they lose and osu wins the rest of their games osu will be ranked number 1 again....the top sec team will lose at least 1 but most likely 2 games given they play against each other.

proves once again that the big ten is the best conference

Usually Trojans hammer beavers (grin), but not tonight.

Big changed in the NCAA landscape tonight.

If you undefeated in your conference, be it the Big 10, or ACC, SEC, you have a claim for the NC, it is that simple.

Why do you say that?

You could lose all your non-conference games (4), go undefeated in your conference, finish 8-4, and come nowhere near the national championship game.

Digital - Sorry I meant that also you would have to have 0 or 1 total loss at the end of the year. So depending on what records the other top teams have, a zero loss team from a BCS conf is basically in the BCS title game, and a 1 loss team would have a claim. last year, OSU had 1 loss, and all other BCS teams had 2 or more losses. In 2006, OSU was unbeaten, and Florida had 1 loss. 2005 , Texas and USC unbeaten, no dipute. 2004, 3 unbeaten teams, Auburn was left out.

My problem is the rankings to begin the year. Who cares?
Rankings/polls should not even come out until week 7 when half the season has been played. THEN, and only THEN should polls be taken.

If you start at #1 and lose a game, you can work your way back up based on your pre-season ranking. If you start #15 and lose a game, you've got no shot.

Without the possibility of a playoff, the only alternative I can see is to abolish pre-season rankings -- And not even have polls until at least half the season has been played. That way the first poll you take is likely to rank more accurately where the teams are after 6-7 games.

When you have pre-season rankings, you start getting into the whole "leapfrog" game.

Thursday night games are dangerous for high ranked teams. Remember last year when two #2 teams went down on a thursday night game?

the crazy thing is that OSU scored 27 points and the game still didn't beat the over of 52-55.

Take me to the tree!

USC always has trouble at Oregon State, going back to the days of O.J. I'm kicking myself for not jumping all over that spread.

Not to mention their weird schedule of playing one week and off the next. You don't get any continuity that way. They have lost 4 of 5 at Oregon State, so this was no surprise to me.

usc should fall to about number 14 right before osu. i think penn state should be number 1 since they beat the crap out or oregon st. proves again that the big is the best

Your guesses were a bit off. USC is #9 and Penn State is #6.

The B10 is awful. How did they do in the BCS bowls last season? They were not even remotely competitive against LSU and USC.

For those clowns thinking Pete Carrol is a shoe-in, back into the NFL? Methinks you guys are re-thinking that now.

Anyone who saw the game tonight knows exactly what happened: Pete worked his magic and got the team refocused. The D looked solid even without Malauga, and the Offense was in sync throughout the game. 44-10. It's still early in the season and no one should count SC out of the BCS just yet.
