"Best buy seems slow."

Anyone been to Best buy or Circuit City lately? Cause it seems like these retail outlets seems dead,I was there this afternoon and damm I didn't see much people checking out plasma tvs or buying anything. The cashiers looks really bored! I wonder if Best buy will layoff their employees due to the bad economy?

I remember looking for a plasma TV at Circuit City about a year ago. The staff was really helpful and they were going out of their way to try to set me up with a complete installation/delivery package. I said I'd think about it and went home to do a comparison on pricegrabber.com. Circuit City's price for that TV was the highest of all the vendors, $800 higher than the best price on the list.

They probably could have gotten away with that kind of approach ten years ago, but it's easy for shoppers to find better deals nowadays. I think you're right that Circuit City will go the same way as Sharper Image and CompUSA. Best Buy occasionally has good deals and smart support staff, so I'm holding out hope for them.

CC just fired its CEO and Blockbuster walked away from a deal to acquire CC. CC should be dead after Christmas or morph to an online-only retailer. If CC gets cheap enough, the Frys boys may swoop in and purchase them in the same way they purchased Radio Shack's big box effort called Incredible Universe.

BB is doing better because they have focused on controlling costs.

Walmart has just marked down some toys and other things to Holiday prices.

Consumers will do a lot of sniffing before opening their wallets this holiday. I expect to see a lot of mark downs from retailers who didn't aggressively pull back on their holiday buying.

BB and Walmart will be winners, Target, JCP, Sears, kmart and CC will be losers.

(From a feature on AOL today regarding stores hit hardest by the credit crisis. Of note, Safeway Stores was also on the list.)

Circuit City (CC) just replaced its CEO and has brought in restructuring experts. If there is a large retailer that may not be able to keep inventory moving to its stores it is this consumer electronics operation. Circuit City's shares now trade at $.76. That figure is likely to fall. Circuit City maintains about $1.5 billion in inventory, according to its last quarterly figures. For the same period, it was down to $90 million in cash.

(A related feature on AOL today mentioned that Circuit City and Best Buy are among the many stores likely to offer great deals on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.)

I was wandering around a Wal-Mart today and noticed that their prices are WAY down from even earlier this year... Saw some nice 40"+ size flat screens for under $800... Knowing full well that Wal-Mart usually does not have the latest and greatest stuff, I still think there were some deals there...
