"Which USB Class do I want?"

I am part of a team developing a new (very much UTR*) product. I am currently using the USB communication class. I don’t want users to have to install COM port drivers, although I could include the appropriate drivers in the install disk. The problem actually goes deeper – I don’t want users to have to figure which fake COM port the USB device connects with.

(*This Under The Radar product will be announced here after it is advertised for sale by our customer. At the very least it will be good for a laugh. I am a part of its contract development team. The development team has no part in any marketing effort or any profit that may result.)

I would be more than happy to use the communication class if a way exists to avoid the COM port nonsense. I can count on a minimally tech savvy user installing the product. But the actual users may be as dumb as rocks. I wish I could say more.

Part of this product involves data collection and transmittal to the USB host. I have been looking for a suitable USB class for a data logger. Ideally once both host and device parts are running and plugged in the logical connection will be made without further user action.

Any pointers will be appreciated.
