"Undercover Boss"

After a thoroughly enjoyable game that lived up to some of the hype, I wonder how many folks stayed around to watch the series premiere of Undercover Boss following the game? The show has gotten almost as much hype as the SB, and I took the bait, at least enough to watch the first show. I thought finally a "reality" show that I might find interesting. For me it was ok, but I gotta wonder about how things were staged for the show.

The first episode featured the President and COO of Waste Management going undercover for a week and taking on several entry level jobs. He sucked at one of the tasks so bad that he was fired. I liked that segment because he later acknowledged the supervisor that "fired" him as a good guy doing a good job. So many people cannot criticize others work in a respectful, compassionate manner.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear any explanation of what the employees were told about the cameraman (possibly camera crew?} following around the newbie? The show was obviously not taped with hidden or surveillance cameras. I would think that having a camera crew follow you around with some unknown person might affect your behavior as you go about your workday unless you always worked under those conditions. I'm pretty sure the most common reaction would NOT be to invite the newbie with the camera crew to my home for dinner after work, where I would share that there are too many mouths to feed and I'm about to lose my dream home because I can't keep up with the payments, but it's all good. It worked out pretty good for this particular woman though, as the Prez met with her supervisor early next morning at the risk of blowing his "cover" and let it be known that she is golden from now on. Turns out that she was able to keep her home and now receives lucrative "bonuses", it was announced at the end of the show. Heartwarming. I wonder if there are any of the other 45,000 workers nationwide who are also busting their butt and dealing with difficult personal circumstances, who are feeling a bit slighted now? So the big boss is a softy, how do I sign up for a chance to cry on his shoulder? At least when Clark Griswold's penny-pinching boss saw the error of his ways, he restored bonuses across the board, not just for the Griswold household.

So color me a bit skeptical. I think this show might be even less real than most "reality" shows. Not too bad as mindless entertainment goes though. At least it didn't grate on me like so many shows do.

Wondering what others thought.

RM

Clark: Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?

Yeah, I didn't hear an explanation for the cameras we were supposed to pretend weren't causing a scene at the job site (didn't see the beginning though, was it explained?)

I wanted to see the middle aged guy on dialysis also go for dinner at the younger gals house and find out why she was the only one there (out of what, 5 other adults) capable of producing an income ..

Clark: Surprised? Eddie if I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now.

I caught bits and pieces of it. As I understand it, the other employees thought they were filming a reality show, something like "Dirty Jobs".

The show looked like a whitewash to me. I'm betting the CEOs got full control of what would and would not be aired. It gave them a chance for a lot of great PR with no downside. They didn't get into what they would actually change for the employees.

It was told to the employees that the new guy was unemployed and he was the subject being filmed for a documentary about getting a new job.

I never watch reality TV shows except Deadliest Catch, but this one kept me interested for the entire show, especially the ending. I think the Hooters CEO is in an upcoming episode so I'll watch that one.

I like the Deadliest Catch too so I will check this out based upon your recommendation. By and large I cannot stand most "reality" shows. Cops is sometimes entertaining but how many times can you see them busting some drunk guy for acting like a jackass before it gets old?

Cops passed old 20 years ago. I can't believe that show is still on the air.

Economically it's been very successful. Production costs are very low.

They said they were filming a documentary of him taking on an entry level job at Waste Management, thus keeping his true identity in tact.

I missed what the conversation was about between the CEO and the one white male supervisor (at the end during the revelation segment). Is that the dude that fired him?

Seems like this was a bit of a softie show.....looks like the Hooters one gets juicy. Makes for good theater, and the mgr probably deserves what's coming but seems a little slimy and not real good for company morale to get punked like that.

But I'll be watching it like a car crash!!

No, the black guy who was in charge of cleaning up the hill with all the waste paper fired him. The CEO couldn't fill the bag fast enough.

The white supervisor was reprimanded by the CEO for instituting a rigid policy of being late. An employee who clocks in 1 minute late is docked 2 minutes.

it seemed like it was pretty damned windy out there, so I thoughtthe black guy was being pretty unreasonable. Of course, the Ceo wasn't cut out for picking up trash anyways...

Anybody see the Hooters episode? I thought it was lame, and it could have been great!
