After a thoroughly enjoyable game that lived up to some of the hype, I wonder how many folks stayed around to watch the series premiere of Undercover Boss following the game? The show has gotten almost as much hype as the SB, and I took the bait, at least enough to watch the first show. I thought finally a "reality" show that I might find interesting. For me it was ok, but I gotta wonder about how things were staged for the show. The first episode featured the President and COO of Waste Management going undercover for a week and taking on several entry level jobs. He sucked at one of the tasks so bad that he was fired. I liked that segment because he later acknowledged the supervisor that "fired" him as a good guy doing a good job. So many people cannot criticize others work in a respectful, compassionate manner.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear any explanation of what the employees were told about the cameraman (possibly camera crew?} following around the newbie? The show was obviously not taped with hidden or surveillance cameras. I would think that having a camera crew follow you around with some unknown person might affect your behavior as you go about your workday unless you always worked under those conditions. I'm pretty sure the most common reaction would NOT be to invite the newbie with the camera crew to my home for dinner after work, where I would share that there are too many mouths to feed and I'm about to lose my dream home because I can't keep up with the payments, but it's all good. It worked out pretty good for this particular woman though, as the Prez met with her supervisor early next morning at the risk of blowing his "cover" and let it be known that she is golden from now on. Turns out that she was able to keep her home and now receives lucrative "bonuses", it was announced at the end of the show. Heartwarming. I wonder if there are any of the other 45,000 workers nationwide who are also busting their butt and dealing with difficult personal circumstances, who are feeling a bit slighted now? So the big boss is a softy, how do I sign up for a chance to cry on his shoulder? At least when Clark Griswold's penny-pinching boss saw the error of his ways, he restored bonuses across the board, not just for the Griswold household.
So color me a bit skeptical. I think this show might be even less real than most "reality" shows. Not too bad as mindless entertainment goes though. At least it didn't grate on me like so many shows do.
Wondering what others thought.

Clark: Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?
