"Mad Men season premiere"

God, I love the show. Don seems headed down a road of depravity; his apartment is a far cry from suburbia, his Puerto Rican housekeeper greets him, instead of his blonde wife, he satisfies his sadomachochistic urges with a paid professional, and he's losing his charm with his clients. Is he caught in the vortex of a downward spiral, or will he somehow right himself. Betty is also caught in her own personal hell; she is a bad mother who somehow has gotten worse, her vengeance towards Don is having a corrosive effect on her new marriage, and her new in-laws detest her. Meanwhile, back at the office...

I think we saw Dick for most of the show, almost like going through the stages of grief. Certainly the guy who did the first interview was pure Dick Whitman. It will be interesting to see what happens when the Roger and Burt read the second article. Don Draper showed up at the end and I think (hope) what we'll see is a blending of the two disparate personalities into a complete person, flaws and all.

Best Line(s) . . .
..."I love how they sit there like a couple of choir boys. You know one of them's leaving New York with a case of VD."
..."They can't even send a whole reporter!"
..."They have 'Chicken Kiev', the butter squirts everywhere"
..."She's a silly woman. Honestly, Henry, I don't know how you can stand living in that man's dirt."
..."Turning creative success into business is your job, and you failed."
..."Count to 100 and then call me."
..."Yes Henry, I think we all agree this is temporary"
..."How are your balls ...they enjoying themselves?"

Now bring on next week so we can figure out what is going on with Joan.

I can't believe Don fucks his secretary, acts like it never happened, makes her feel like a cheap whore, all before lunchtime. Wow. Must be nice. He really needs to see that hot blond shrink, but she'll be horizontal under him as well. Needs major therapy.

That blond shrink is played by Carla Buono, who played Christopher's wife in the Sopranos.

Huge props to the writers of this show.

It has a pace that confounds, and a story line that is so good there simply is no reason to think "I know what happens next" (one of the worst aspects of most movies/shows)

And, I can not recall ANY show that actually had businessmen talking about business in a way that didn't make it just a background coloring of the plot(s).

Well, let me admit something from the start, I'm a MadMen virgin, or, I was until last week. I had Netflix send me Vol 1 and 2 on blueray, vol 3 should arrive Friday.

In the first volume when they were taking Peggy around on her first day, I noticed the actress Kristen Schaal, but in other episodes in and around the operator room, she has been replaced. I've enjoyed her appearance on Letterman

I'd like to say upfront, that I'd like to fuck Peggy on the couch, too and I think I would have preferred January Jones or another, "honey" to see Peggy's legs up in the air through the not quite opaque office glass instead of the janitor. I'm assuming Peggy's growing waistline and skirt ripping are due to some hanky panky that will produce a love child in a future episode.

And I thought it was a nice touch that Mrs. Draper loaded her gun and did some shooting in her front yard, with a cigarette in one hand, I think, at the end of volume 2.

All I got to say is, Betty is a bad girl, and it's rubbing off on Sally.

On Season two, 3rd disc....did Duck really abandon his beautiful Irish Setter? since he is on the wagon, feed him a bottle of J&B to give him a nice case of the DTs....

I liked the episode this week for many reasons. In general MM is definitely a show I watch again to pick up nuances I missed the first time around. I almost always watch the encore. IMO, this show is a great test tube for 60s sociology and the fact it's so subtle is lost on many (or perhaps I'm over reading into it).

Note to bb: If you think Duck is in bad behavior with the dog, he outdoes himself later--only instead of a leash, it's a TV power cord. I don't want to give too much away and you'll figure it out when you get there.

Love the plot where Don buy a hooker for his (lonely) co-worker...
