"Fresno State invited to join Mountain West Conference"

COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Mountain West Conference has extended invitations to join the league to Fresno State and Nevada.

The MWC announced on Wednesday that it has offered the Bulldogs and Wolf Pack an opportunity to leave the Western Athletic Conference and join a league that's losing Utah -- and possibly BYU -- next season but gaining Boise State, another WAC school.

The MWC announcement came just minutes after league member BYU acknowledged reports that the Cougars could be going independent in football and joining the WAC in all other sports. The BYU statement stopped well short of confirming any of the reports, saying only that the school will explore its options.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson was out of the office Wednesday and did not immediately return calls and e-mails seeking comment.

President Welty offers statement regarding Mountain West announcement

Regarding the announcement issued this afternoon by the Mountain West Conference, California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty offers this statement:

"Fresno State is honored to have received the invitation to join the Mountain West Conference. We are seriously considering the invitation, and do so with the best interests of our Athletics program, our university, our community and Bulldog fans as our top priorities."

An announcement of our decision will be forthcoming.

The WAC is pissed off! According to KMJ radio, they are demanding a 5 million dollar payment from both Fresno and Nevada, within 60 days

Now instead of being a perennial 8-4 or 7-5 team in the WAC Fresno can become a perennial 5-7 or 4-8 team in the MWC. Works for me.
I have a buddy who is the single most obnoxious Fresno State fan in the world.

I'm curious who pays those 5 million the booster or student's or athletic department?
Isn't it funny how money just like beer is the problem & solution to all of life's problems.

I believe they'll use creative accounting. For example lower travel costs, better tv money, better bowl money, something like that to justify the payoff. Then hit the boosters,
