"Jeff Garcia - RIP"

Jeff signed with the Omaha Nighthawks....the pull of wanting to play is huge, I guess......

Ex-49ers quarterback Garcia signs with UFL team
Vittorio Tafur, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, August 19, 2010
Jeff Garcia signed with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League on Wednesday, a month after former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell's name briefly appeared on the Nighthawks roster.

Garcia, 40, played five seasons for the 49ers and was with the Raiders last preseason before being cut. The four-time Pro Bowl selection signed with Philadelphia and played in one game before the Eagles released him in September.

"I am so ready and excited," the Gilroy native said. "I know that the state of Nebraska has a great passion for football and I can already see that the people of Omaha have fully embraced the Nighthawks. I still have the drive, commitment, and ability to play this game at the highest level and one thing that I definitely share with the people of Omaha is a passion for the game."

Russell didn't sign with Omaha after the Raiders released him in May. He is awaiting trial on a charge of possession of codeine without a prescription. But the UFL has landed a bunch of ex-Raiders quarterbacks.

Daunte Culpepper signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions and Josh McCown joined the Hartford Colonials. Just like Russell, the fourth quarterback from the 2007 Raiders - Andrew Walter - was also temporarily on Omaha's roster before being removed.

Garcia has also played for Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay during his 11-year NFL career. The former San Jose State star is one of only eight quarterbacks in NFL history who have had back-to-back 30-touchdown passing seasons (2000 and 2001 with the 49ers).

I see absolutely nothing about his situation to merit the "RIP" comment. We all reach a point in life where we can no longer compete at the highest physical level. Garcia probably has more money in the bank than he could spend in a lifetime, so why shouldn't he be able to go out and play for sheer fun or the love of the game?

Yeah but your body takes a bit less wear playing a saxophone than it does getting run over by a 300lb lineman, so your analogy really does not approach applying here.

Have to agree ith AMPFan on this. Garcia might want also to stay in shape and be ready if a pro team may need him this year.He could still be a decent backup for the right team this year.Quarterbacks are always going down.

Besides....maybe its just fun to him and he enjoys it. Being a football player ain't like golf where you can always pick up the clubs and head to a course. There have to be a bunch of other guys who wanna do it too. He knows when he hangs them up its forever. Put it off a few years in the UFL if he can.

Agree that "RIP" was a poor choice for the title. Most posters here wish they could do whatever the fuck it is they do as well as Garcia can at his age.

Oh yeah, and he's got the money too. Burn.

I never understood why they got rid of him in the first place. He was a good QB and he showed that he could do the job a hell of a lot better than the QB's that they keep. Go figure.

when he did good, they gave him a big contract, then figured it was too big and they couldn.t afford him. blame the gm for that.

I wish the Raiders would of got Jeff before they selected Jamarcus Russell. Lane Kiffen wanted to draft Calvin Johnson... Jamarcus set us back 7 years
