"Time for a new phone"

My two-year contract with ATT is about over and I was interested in getting input on the IPhone versus other new phones out there. At the very least, can I get the name of a good website that will let me compare side by side?

Thanks in advance!

If you are thinking of leaving ATT for Verizon or Sprint, review their coverage map to ensure that where you travel the most is covered and understand where the dead spots are.

if you get an iphone, I think you are required to purchase a data plan, so you are looking at $1200 per year overhead

Verizon has the best coverage all around and the 30 day money back no questions asked... Cant go wrong with that, but I think they charge 35.00 restocking fee.

Caveat - this is my personal phone. I use Metro for my work phone and like the ability to access the net. I realize that I'm going to have to get a data package if I upgrade my phone. I'm more interested in features for the phones; Iphone versus droid versus blackberry, etc. In other words, what do you have and what do you like/dislike about your phone.

Thank you for the input so far.

This is true. AT&T has fucked up coverage.

here is a link to an article on iphone vs droid

I think if I was getting one, I'd lean towards the droid because att has capped its data plan while you can get an unlimited plan with verizon, which is important if you plan to stream movies.

Thank you for the references. Any personal likes/peeves with what you have? I'm concerned about the touch screen keyboard because I have nails and it's a major pain on my Ipod touch.

Go with the New Droid 2 by Motorala. Has a touchscreen then slides opens up to a full qwerty hard keyboard.

The phone also offers full flash with the android 2.2 os. 1ghz. processor, internal/removable memory as well. Way faster web surfing then an iphone4 and waaay more reliable coverage with Verizon.

I've never really had coverage issues w/ ATT so I don't think that's so much the issue. Does Verizon have unlimited data included in their plans? That might be a factor and reason to change I suppose.

Also the Droid 2 ranked just above the Iphone3 but it was rated lower by consumers according to PC magazine.

Comments?

Yes, Verizon's data plan(phone)is unlimited. I own the Droid HTC INCREDIBLE. You mentioned you hate texting on a touch screen, so that's why I recommended the Droid 2.

Best thing, just go to a Verizon, go to an att store and physically compare!

I've read that the implementation of flash is sketchy at best. I've not seen it in action myself.

Opinion?

Great advise Product and of course that will be part of my process. Obviously personal preferences play the biggest role in purchasing a personal data device. My concern is always being "sold" at the store and then finding out something that everyone knew all along but because I didn't go consumer input hunting, I made a decision I regretted. As I will be signing up for new two-year plan which I dread, I want to be happy with my decision.

Any feedback on Sprint? TMobile? MetroPCS?

My work phone is Metro and I like the unlimited plan but I'm concerned about combining my phones though I've considered gettina phone where I can switch the sims card or use Google voice.

If you don't need 4G, Samsung Moment and Intercept phones on Sprint aren't too bad. Features: Android, QWERTY pullout and 3.2 camera. I'd go with the moment over the intercept, but that's just me.

If you're going for latest/greatest, then get the 4G Epic.

I went through the same decision. My Windows phone died and it sucked.

I got the Samsung Captivate. It's been great and much better than the iphone. It's also known as the Galaxy phone which is sold on other networks. It's an Android phone - really cool.

There are plenty of cool apps to download.

I can see RB just fine.

Did you see the article about ATT? They want to add antennas to improve their coverage, but the neighborhoods give them a hard time. Then these same people bitch about the coverage. You can't seem to catch a break.

This phone and most Android phones are on 2.1. The new version 2.2 aka Froyo is coming out soon. You can upgrade to the new operating system.

Have fun!

I've got Verizon and really like the coverage.

Am now using a Blackberry Tour. Really liked it until they upgraded the software a few month ago. Now it sucks. And not in a good way!

Maybe some of the other Blackberry software works better on the other phones, like the Curve, but I don't even think Verison carries the Tour anymore.

One of the things I don't like about it is... you have a string of texts from/to a specific person, then you get a call from that same person, you can not text them after the call unless one of two things happen.

1. you delete all text messages from that person, just so you can get rid of the call message alert (not talking about the voice mail). Or...
2. that person texts you again.

Or maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure out how to make it work right.

Anyway, good luck with your phone search.

Hugs,
Wicked50
