After the first quarter I lost interest. It looks like there aren't any surprises with the personnel.

I was at the game (LB3) and the crowd just went nuts when Patrick Willis went over to Brett to reintroduce himself and welcome Favre to another season in the NFL... and even more so on the next Viking series when he didn't come out to the huddle (during the TV time-out). Much fun had by all (or, well, the few of us who have season tickets and showed up).

Favre has already cemented his legacy and proven his dominance over the Niners. He annihilated and torched them many times over his career.

The Niners in the the meantime are light years away from previous glory, and a move by Willis on the aging vet means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme. Brett still great. Niners still struggling with people like Smith.

Brett will be lucky to last 10 games. Time to call it a career. Willis is the best defensive player in the NFC West, by far. This is the year for Smith to do or be gone. We'll see. You're obviously a fustrated Raider fan who has indured seven seasons of 11+ loss seasons. They couldn't even sell out the game this Saturday; Some fans. It'll be on tape delayed at 10:00 pm.

Don't know if you're a proverbial frustrated Raider fan or not, nor do I care (am not a Raider hater by any stretch), but for any Raider or Brett Favre fan to actually use the phrase "light years away from previous glory"...um, nice try.

I'm neither a Niners fan nor a Raiders fan, but this characterization, "light years away from previous glory", is very true.

I just finished reading "The Genius: How Bill Walsh Re-Invented Football and Created an NFL Dynasty".

When you consider the success of the Niners under Walsh and Seifert, with players like Montana, Young, Rice, Lott, ..., then look at today's team, today's team is light years away from getting to the Superbowl, much less becoming a dynasty.

In 1980 the Niners were coming off two seasons with a total of 4 wins. Steve DeBerg was the quarterback. A lot of people would have said that they were "light years" away from a successful franchise. A year later they were the Superbowl champs and started a dynasty that lasted 20+ years. One never knows, do one? I guess you just had to be there.

There were two key elements responsible for that turnaround in the 1980's - Eddie DeBartolo and Bill Walsh.

Eddie D spared no expense to make the team successful. Bill Walsh perfected an innovative offensive strategy that flouted conventional wisdom and then found the players to make it happen.

No such elements can be found in the current Niners team to effect such a dramatic turnaround.

I guess it depends on how you define "dynasty", but I don't think it lasted 20 years. The first championship was in 1981-82, the last in 1994-95. I would argue that the dynasty ended in 1989-90 season with their fourth championship, even though they won the Superbowl in 1995.

The best team of the 1990's was Dallas with Jimmy Jones, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, et al. In the 90's, Dallas won three Superbowls to two each for the Niners and Broncos.

In any case, I don't believe that the current Niners have anything that would indicate a return to greatness.

Have read that book, and met both the subject, his wife and son Craig. Good read. Good people.

My comment wasn't about the 49ers, and you're not exactly going out on a limb comparing any team to what Walsh and DeBartolo did (not that there's much in the way of dynasties anymore, anyway).

My comment was about the previous inane one above, whether it came from a disgruntled Raider fan (and as I stated, I'm not a Raider hater) or Favre fanboy.

The former needs to pray their owner doesn't drive the proverbial car over the ledge or that their head coach doesn't slug any more subordinates, and the latter just needs to go away and accept that the better current quarterback, hell-the better man (one whines about how teams done him wrong while the other builds houses for Katrina victims), is Drew Brees.
