"be careful around mac aluminum keyboards"

I spilled just a little liquid on it, and the affected keys are useless. I popped off the keys, kept it in front of a fan for a couple days, and still nothing. I usually cover the keyboard, but I got lazy for a couple weeks and wham....one spill, and now a trip back to the store for a new keyboard.

I just spilled on my old black-key apple KB, and it pooled the fluid in the bottom tray and kept on clicking.

it may still fail. No keyboard, Mac or otherwise, is likely to withstand spills. Except MAYBE the combat ready laptop Toshiba makes and the military uses.

Over the years, I have killed at least 3 Mac keyboards that way, and a PC keyboard or 2 also.

I finally set myself up so there is a separate side table where I make myself keep all drinks.

Works for me.

I usually rely on saran wrap, which of course does not adhere to aluminum boards as easily. But I was between changes and feeling lazy.

I suspect under the little feet are screws. They are probably those mini torx things. Since it's probably already fucked, why not take it apart and see if it can be rehabilitated? What do you have to lose?

No screws under the feet?
Well, fuck it then, get one of those wireless keyboards.
They are pretty cool.
My regular one is not currently fucked, so I have no excuse right now for getting one.
When something gets inexorably fucked, it's the universe telling you you were just given an upgrade.

This may sound crazy and definitely counter-intuitive but did you try dipping the keyboard in a tub filled with hot soapy water and then allowing it to thoroughly dry? I'm guessing you spilled something like coffee on it - and that has more than simply water. The sugars and other components left behind after the liquid dries needs to be washed away.

Back in the day, I cleaned all kinds of electronic assemblies this way. One manufacturer of a radar system even recommended it as part of an annual preventive maintenance program. The key is to use HOT water so it will evaporate quicker.

I'm not sure what this aluminum keyboard is like, but I have cleaned older "beige box" types this way. The only issue I ran into is some of the keyboards used a light oil - something along the order of sewing machine oil - to lubricate the individual key switch. Your Mac keyboard may have a setup like this; that could make it nearly impossible to salvage back into useful service.

Never tried this with the new thin aluminum keyboard, but I have actually had success running their predecessor through the dishwasher as a last resort after a client spilled coffee on it. Just make sure you turn off the dry cycle, and let it air dry for several days before using it.

But, according to YouTube, it can be done

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9QhQNtV4Lw

If you don't want to go that route, the key caps are fairly easily removed, and you could try to clean out only the keys that aren't functioning.

Good luck....

It was plain tea, nothing added. Over a week later with the keys off, no luck.

What about the lube? Wouldn't that be a bigger problem?

Fuck it, it's probably fucked anyway, so why not try running it through the dishwasher?
What do you have to lose?

Logically, I suppose I should run it through the dishwasher.

Sometimes, I find it therapeutic when things stop functioning to get a hammer and smash them to pieces. You could do that if the dishwasher project fails.
