"Chris Penn autopsy"

Full report in a few weeks ... but this just in.

He died of an enlarged heart and too much prescription cough syrup.

Gawd, what a trip, I really liked him as an actor.

Sounds like he was addicted to his cough syrup, what a bummer. It also looked as though he had gained quite a bit of weight over time, and that may have had something to do with his heart condition as well.

Thanks for sharing the info...

That was over the counter cough syrup. The syrup he was taking was prescription with codeine.

It's not just the codeine but the phenegran that makes that cough syrup addictive and risky.

It does work though - narcotics reduce coughing (yeah, even a vicodin pill will do this) and antihistimines do more to reduce coughing than syrup. You're better off taking a benadryl (and a nap!) than robitussin. The syrup feels good in the short-term.

Sounds like heart failure. All that weight, all that extra fluid - the heart has to work harder and harder to keep perfusion up. It gets bigger than it should and then it gets weak and can fail.

This wasn't an accident though. These are prescription drugs. The prescriber(s) should have been monitoring his cardiac situation. Someone that overweight and complaining of a persistant cough -- congestive heart failure should have been top of the list. The blood the heart can't pump out backs up into the lungs, causing the person to be short of breath and cough.

Of course, he could have gotten the meds on the black market/Mexico. Yay!

Sad thing - he was a decent actor, even if his brother got all the glory.

Codeine? Too much Codeine? That is just downright sad. At least Belushi had the balls to do Heroin and Cocaine, I guess the talent is just diminished these days (bad joke, ok?). RIP Chris. Glad I didn't have a brother who had all the glory.

Busy paving the road to hell.

Just want to clarify for anyone, I feel very sorry for Chris (particularly as he was younger then I am) and his family. I liked him in several roles that he played.

In my profession I deal with an inordinate amount of death, yeah! NOT. I have always enjoyed the Addams Family and Charles Addams sense of humour and I think I have developed a bit of a macabre sense of humour myself to deal with some of the emotional stresses that I take on for my clients.

Busy paving the road to hell.

Elvis died on prescription meds, died at his toilet. Not a very glamourous way to go. A drug is a drug, is a drug, especially in excess, no matter if it's cocaine, heroin or cough syrup.

Okay, Ferdinand, I'm changing your name to Morrissey...

A little respect, please. We don't say, "Elvis died on the toilet" in here. We say, "the King died on the throne."

Yes, that sounds much more respectful. Thank you, your highness...
