"Best or favorite guitar solo"

I'm capitalizing on Hardballer's post regarding John Mayall. Does anyone have a single favorite guitar solo. One that still makes them want to go "air" when they hear it.

I have many but can boil it down to two for this post: The lead from "Key to Love" off of the "Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton" by John Mayall and then the Clapton lead in "Crossroads" by Cream that is recorded live. I know I have many, many others. Hubert Sumlin rips in up on "Tender Charms" by Howlin' Wolf but that isn't so well known but should be.

Your favorites? I know there has to be a Jimmy Page entry somewhere. It will be good to see this old guy fares with other generations.

One of my favorite guitar riffs was from the Jeff Beck song 'People Get Ready'. Rod Stewart was on the vocals for that, but the guitar track really makes that song rock.

Clapton's guitar solo on "Layla" was great. Jack White's solo on "Seven Nation Army" is a more recent favorite.

L8inlife and Skoobie took a couple of my favorite ones already.....
Clapton's Crossroads and Hangar 18 both phenominal in their own ways

But as for the latest and greatest I would have to say John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (c'mon y'all knew i was gonna say that)!

From the early youthful days of "Under the Bridge" and "Soul to Squeeze" to his horrowing herion inspired days of "Curtains". I cannot choose just one

Oh and how could I forget Frank Zappa "Them or Us"!!!

David Gilmour on 'Time"
Clapton on 'Badge'
Alex Lifeson on 'Crossroads', which in my opinion blows Clapton away. it can be found on Rush's Ep 'Feedback'.

slide rules!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_guitar
History
The technique of using a slide on a string has been traced by noted blues scholar and musician Dr. David Evans to a one-string toy-instrument: the "diddley bow," which resembles one-stringed African instruments. The tuning and bend filled playing style resembles the blues-harp. (van der Merwe 1989, pp. 66-67)

The technique was made popular by African American blues artists. Some of the blues artists who most prominently used the slide include gospel singer Blind Willie Johnson, Son House, and Robert Johnson. The sound has since become commonplace in country and Hawaiian music. It is also used occasionally in classic rock, mainly by bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin that have been heavily influenced by the blues.

Arguably the most influential classic electric blues slide guitarist is Elmore James, whose riff in the song "Dust My Broom" is held in particularly high regard. Blues legend Muddy Waters was also very influential, particularly in developing the electric Chicago blues slide guitar from the acoustic Mississippi Delta slide guitar.

The late Duane Allman played a key role in bringing slide guitar into rock music, through his work with the Allman Brothers Band and with Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album. Beginning in the 1960s, Allman used an empty glass Coricidin medicine bottle, which he wore over his ring finger, as a slide; this was later picked up by other slide guitarists such as Bonnie Raitt, Rory Gallagher, and Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Such bottles eventually went out of production in the early 1980s (although replicas have been produced since 1985).[1][2]

Grammy award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Bonnie Raitt also showcased the slide guitar, as well as studio and solo artist Ry Cooder and the late George Harrison (particularly in his later albums). Jack White of the White Stripes uses slide guitar for the solos on the album Elephant, and can be seen doing so in the video for "Seven Nation Army". John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers also used slide on the track "Scar Tissue". Derek Trucks, nephew of Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks, is a dedicated artist and accomplished practitioner of the technique. Joe Walsh also uses slide guitar in his classic "Rocky Mountain Way".

Though more rarely than with guitar, some musicians have used slides with bass guitar — slide bass. Mark Sandman of Morphine was probably the best known proponent (with Morphine, he performed primarily on a custom two-string slide bass guitar), though Bill Laswell, Kevin Rutmanis and Marc Sloan have also played slide bass. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin has performed on a custom-made bass lap steel.

Bill Hicks and Guitarplayer.....Great choices! I still remember the live version of Rock Bottom off of Strangers in the Night, it does not get any better than that! I got a chance to see Boston at Shoreline about 12 years ago and it was awesome! Another couple that come to mind is Stranglehold off of Double Live Gonzo from Ted Nugent and pretty much anything from local favorite Joe Satriani but I like Surfing with the Alien. A couple others:

Cult of personality-Living Colour
Dreams-Van Halen
Run for the Hills-Iron Maiden

interesting...there's so many to choose from. it seems as though some of you are chiming in w/ cool riffs from songs. certain songs that i dont remember a distinct solo. such as iron maiden, run to the hills. killer song, great riff. but i dont really recall a great solo in the middle. here's a few of my favorites:

joe satriani- "always with me, always with you"...granted, the whole song is instrumental. but in the middle of it, he absolutely shreds, my idea of a "solo"

santana- "samba pa ti"....again, all instrumental. the whole song is powerful and emotional, but then in the middle, he tears it up. ottmar liebert does a version of this as well and santana fills in on it in the middle. awesome.

van halen- "eruption" the whole song, eddie just being eddie and kicking ass.

someone chimed in about slide guitar. not really known for amazing guitarists, just a grunge band. but what about:
pearl jam- "yellow leadbetter". i love that.

of course there are numerous from eric clapton, stevie ray vaughn, hendrix, randy rhodes. when you get into actual metal, kirk hammet of metallica could definitely shred with some fast, speed metal solos.

good topic. i could be here all night. a lot of talented dudes out there. i wish i could play like that.

you misunderstood. i was just saying that pearl jam wasn't anywhere on the map of having someone that's a great guitarist. but the song yellow leadbetter by pearl jam had a cool slide guitar solo in it.

L8additon: Capaci, I completely missed your post that references Wikipedia so the following is redundent but adds a few new names to check out. I also think I misunderstood your comment regarding the modern players . . . geez, better have that morning cup before hitting the keyboard.
=================================

Capaci, don't diss the brother on one aspect of guitar playing or elevate it above all others.

While I appreciate and share your enthusiasm for slide guitar the folks you mentioned are extreme lightweights. If you want to hear some incredible work, and you probably already are aware of these folks, check out David Lindley and what he can do with a slide and a Weisenborn (spelling?). Can you say Ry Cooder and Leo Kottke? Or Bonnie Raitt -- the girl can simply play. Then head on down to the Delta for the gentlemen that made it real like Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Willie Johnson ("Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground" is the Sistine Chapel of soulful slide playing IMHO), and of course Mr. Elmore James. Then head on into the Hawaiian work -- incredible and distinctive.

Ah, geez, here I am going Community Hall on you . . . sorry about that. It's important to me to put it all in context. All these musicians contributed to development of the sound. I am currently enclosing myself in the Delta/Texas/Chicago blues phenomena. Amazing, simply amazing. Just to show you that I'm serious about it, I did purchase a National Tricone steel guitar. Amazing instrument with or without slide. I'm still a neophyte and probably always will be but who cares as long as I don't and find the time to figure it out.

Thanks to all for their contributions to this thread. Many new things to check out and was reminded of the many standouts.

Regards,

-L8

WAYYYY too many to list! I tend to go through phases, and lately have pulled out Abbey Road's Golden Slumbers.... the back & forth between John and George sets me off every time. It's also a good one for venturing into the air drum solo

But, the list has GOT to include:

Alvin Lee - I'm Goin' Home

Santana - Samba Pa Ti --I know it was already listed above, but think it deserves 2 votes

Johnny Winter - Good Mornin' Little Schoolgirl

Rich Derringer - Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo

Brian May (Queen) - Bohemium Rhapsody

Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien

B. B. King - The Thrill is Gone

Slash (Guns n' Roses) - Sweet Child of Mine

Pete Townsend - Won't Get Fooled Again

Jimmy paige - Stairway to Heaven

What a great list. I forgot about Ten Years After and Johnny Winter's speedfreak version of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". I wore my Garrard Turntable out playing those. And Santana is still fresh in 2006. Brian May, what a huge call.

That freekin' Rick Derringer "Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo" commercial currently playing on CNBC is stuck in my mind right now. Classics.

I've got too many to list here so I'll just give few of my faves:

AC/DC- "Thunderstruck"- killer intro as well.
Thin Lizzy- "Whiskey in the Jar"- guitar rock original
Van Halen- "Panama", "Eruption"
Metallica-"Whiplash"
Oasis-"Live Forever","Don't Look Back In Anger"

Here's a few more. I thought I'd throw these in because these are some of my favorite bass solos:

The Who- "My Generation"
Metallica-"Anesthesia(Pulling teeth)-written by the late Cliff Burton
Motorhead-"Stay Clean"-Lemmy still rocks!

"I don't know, it's just the way I am"
