"Best or favorite Guitar solo - Continued (part 2)"

The original Guitar solo thread was too good to let go without a sequel so here's part 2!

The lists were great and and took me for a stroll down memory lane and some of my better days.

Macdoctor listed alot of my favorites but I'll try to expand on his list.

too good not to mention a 2nd or third time:
- Alvin Lee - I'm Goin' Home
- Santana - Samba Pa Ti - or anything by Carlos for that matter
- Rich Derringer - Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo

A few more off the top of my head:
- Johnny Winters - Jumpin Jack Flash
- Leslie West - Missippi Queen
- Michael Bloomfield - Albert's Shuffle, Killing Floor
- Jimi Hendrix - Come On, Johnny B. Goode
- Eric Clapton - Crossroads

I'll agree with you on any Santana stuff. Someone that nobody mentioned, and in an interview Hendrix said he was amazed at his abilities,is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Also, who can leave out Angus Young of AC/DC... lots of good music on part 1 of this thread;you all have good taste in music.

   > ... in an interview Hendrix said he was
>amazed at his abilities,is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top

Interesting he would say that. Gibbons does amazing textures, though how much of that is studio magic I dunno, as I've never hear ZZTop live. Gibbons sat in on the Letterman show recently, and his lead work used a rather limited musical vocabulary.

Another texturist of note is the guitarist who played with The Police (Andy something?).

Some favorites;

Clapton on "Badge" (very late Cream - album name may have been "The Very Very Best of Cream??). To me this is archetypal Clapton from that period, perfectly architected. Pretty, rather than raw as in his "Crossroads" outing.

Another Clapton cut, pre-Mayall, that I'd like to find again was a tune called "Steppin' Out." Absolutely kicked *ss - a startling advance in blues guitar at the time. Phenomenal technique.

This next one goes waaayyy back, and y'all are gonna call me a PL for mentioning it, until/unless you go hear it. I don't know the guitarist's name, but have you ever heard the solo on "Lipstick on Your Collar" by Connie Francis? The player has to be a studio guy, and a holdover from jazz/big bands, but uses a rock sound. I gotta go find that again too.

Oh gawd, too many to list. Here's a few of my favorites:

Most anything by the "Kings" -- the legendary B.B. and Albert
Eric Clapton is God -- "Layla"
Carlos Santana -- "Superstition" and "Smooth"
Mark Knopfler's work on "The Princess Bride" -- particularly his solo on "Storybook Love"
Stevie Ray Vaughn -- can't pick one, maybe "Pride and Joy"?
Jimmie Vaughn -- "Tough Enough"
Lee Ritenour's work with jazz legend Dave Grusin
Eric Johnson's entire debut album, "Ah Via Musicom"
The incomparable Django Reinhardt's work with Stéphane Grappelli
The incredible first album of new guitar techniques by Stanley Jordan
and my absolute favorite... Pat Metheny's early work, particularly the haunting "Are You Going With Me?" -- best breakup song ever

The original thread asked to list your personal favorite solo, not to list every conceivable solo you could possibly think of.

If anyone has one personal favorite, I'd like to hear it. I tend to like melodic ones (horizontal) as opposed to those based off chords (vertical).

Agreed but it's tough to pick just one . . . kind of like naming the best ballplayer of all time. My thoughts in the initial thread to think of the one (and there can be more than one) that automatically has you starting to do a little air guitar work . . . or makes you stop . . . you never get tired of it after hearing it literally thousands of times (sometimes in one day if you're really have the OCD working) . . . alas I digress.

But it would be interesting for folks to limit themselves to their top three at most. It's not fair or honest as noted above but like the standard line says, if you could only pick three . . ." Now I gotta think of those three.

Hubert Sumlin's masterpiece on Howlin' Wolf's "Tender Charms" -- you will be impressed. Buy the Chess CD and you won't be disappointed.
Junior Brown, "I hung it up" -- he plays a guitar with two necks: standard six string electric and then a lap steel neck -- simply, simply, amazing.
Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Testify" -- almost four minutes of simply blazin' guitar work

I pick these three because they are the ones I blast to my ears when I just can't get going and they put that four-four beat in my foot and that's all I need. So many others I could choose and want to include but these will hold up very well.

Ever hear "Driving Sideways" when Mick was with John Mayall in the sixties? Agree on "Can You Hear Me Knockin'".

Every guitar enthusiast HAS to own the album.....

The interplay between Paul's harmonica and Mike's guitar is the best call and response (shout and cry?) I've heard, 'cept maybe some Indians doing talbas back and forth at about 1000BPM...

try:

song: Melow Down Easy
guitar: Mike Bloomfield
Band: Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Album: ( band name and album name same same )

And to quote some fan on amazon.com: If you love Butterfield, this is a must have CD. If you are unfamiliar with Butterfield, this is the place to start. In either case, you should own this disc!

The tracks samples on amazon.com aren't half bad:

Speaking of Clapton's guest work, he made some recordings with Freddy King. My favorite solo from those collaberations is on "Gambling Woman Blues" with Freddy King, Eric Clapton and Sonny Terry (I think I got the last name right) taking turns and then all jamming together, the latter playing some mean slide guitar. It's on the "Freddie King: 1934-1976" album.

Other examples of modern masters playing with their heroes brings to mind Stevie Ray Vaughn playing with Lonnie Mack on Lonnie's "Strike Like Lighting" Album. Check our "Double Whammy". Or check out Lonnie's original early 60s bombshells "Wham!" and "Memphis". I also like his solo on "Stop" from Stike like Lightning, especially the live version, and it's best to hear him play it in person.

And finally, speaking of live guitar solos: If you are ever in Chicago, go to Rosa's Blues Lounge and check out Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band. Melvin is Koko Taylor's nephew. He plays scintillating guitar solos night after night. His covers of Santana (Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va) are jaw-dropping.

You do have good taste in music jacko. I have to say I could live without hearing the live version of Do you feel like I do ever again. Other than that not bad choices. Have you heard the Mark Knopfler Emmylou Harris collaboration? It is quite good.

Thanks Rock. We do seem to hit a few musical "chords" now and then. Yeah, the Frampton one usually gets the doggy head tilt from most people, but I try and remember it in the context of when it hit...it stood everyone on their heads, so thats the image I keep. If you want to see a cool interpretation of a song, go to this link and watch "Jolene".

http://search.music.yahoo.com/search/?p=white+stripes&m=video

You may need a Yahoo log in, but it's a very enjoyable video.

I haven't heard too much of that collaboration yet. I am still stuck on "Van Lear Rose" with Jack WHite and Loretta Lynn. Fucking amazing.

Favorite guitar solo is pretty hard to pin down as the lists here show. There are so many excellent guitarists.
One of my favorites is under-represented here, so I have to give props to Alex Lifeson.
Technically he is very good with an amazing variety of licks and sounds, and he expresses a huge amount of emotion in his playing.
If I had to pin-point one song it would be The Necromancer on Caress of Steel (with 3 guitar solos)
