"Cat Issues"

The neighbors cat has attacked my cat, in my yard, twice in the last two months. I've paid almost $800.00 to fix my guy up. I asked the asshole to give me the name of his HO carrier so I could submit a claim. He blew me off. No question that it's his cat, but I don't have any DNA evidence. Any suggestions from my RB brothers on a course of action? Try and keep the wizeass comments to a minimum. Thanks.

All I can do is tell you my "neighbors cat" story.

Every night, it would jump on the hood of my car in the apt carport and spray my windshield right in front of the driver. I had to keep Windex and paper towels in the car.

One day I found a 96VDC battery at a hobby store. The kind they used to start model airplanes with.

I laid an old blanket on the hood of my car after I came home. Then I laid a piece of metal window screen on top of the blanket. Then I took another piece of screen and laid it across the windshield. I then connected each terminal of the batt to the two pieces of screen.

The next morn, there was only a little dribble of spray on my windshield. There was none for the next week, so I stopped putting the setup on the car. Musta worked.

Now that's what I call resourceful. Unfortunately, doesn't help me. I'm thinking of trapping him and taking him to the SPCA.

since I am a cat lady, I feel your pain. I love all cats but when somebody or something fux with my kittys..oh it's on! Without trying to beat the cats ass yourself, try to catch it (good luck) and call animal control. I wonder if you can make a police report? if you're in Oakland, you can do the report online and call it a night. Or better yet, civil court. shit, I dont know, but do something...before I have to come over there and help you with this problem.

$5 dollar sling shot from Big5. Shoot your neighbors cat on sight. It will soon get the message your house is off limits.

Or if you really don't care. A high powered air rifle, a pellet traveling at 1,200 fps through the skull will drop that cat down in a heart beat. Then follow the 3 S rule: Shoot, Shovel, Shut up.

Maybe not, but if his neighbors cat is inflicting wounds that require vet care, then one day, his cat may be killed by the other cat, as this tends to escalate.

I'd first send a letter to the neighbor that the other
cat caused the X-amount of bill..and give him 5 days to
respond. Make sure you put this in the letter.

Wait 5 days after the date you are seeking and IF he
does not respond, file a small claims suit in your
county. Take it to court and make sure the VET who
took care of your cat, can testify to justify your CASE.

You might need to pay the VET $100 for him being a WITNESS.

Then it will be UP to the JUDGE to decide.

I think Keeley is on the right track except I am not sure how the vet could act as a witness ? The only thing the vet can testify to is that you brought an injured cat in. Unless he saw the neighbor's cat beat your cat up, then that's all he can say.

But I think a letter is a good idea (at least as a bluff) and maybe a videotape of the cat attacking your cat ? I don't know if the judge would be willing to look at it or if it's admissable or whatever bt I guess you could try. I would attach a photocopy of the vet bill to the letter and maybe bluff a bit and tell him you have tape of his cat attacking yours. That's going out on a limb a bit, though. Or (I know this sucks) you could just keep your cat inside ?

Sorry this happened.

I can not help you on the legal/money part but as a guy that has cats living with him I say make your friend an indoor cat.

Fights with other cats is how they catch things and there are so many other dangers for outdoor cats like cars, dogs and other preditors.

Show him ya love him and keep him in your home.

This is not a smart ass comment. How do you know that it is the neighbor's cat if you did not witness the actual event? With all due respect, cats are nocturnal and come from everywhere to socialize while humans sleep.

My suggestion is call the Placer SPCA (not the Sac SPCA) and ask to talk to a "cat socializer"; I am not kidding, they have them.

Probably the smartest thing to do is nothing; it looks like the cats have settled their business and they will probably not fight too much anymore especially if the other cat is dominant now.

I know you never said you wanted to hurt this cat, but if you are thinking along these lines please think about this.

You should not take action to hurt the neighbor's cat for two reasons (other than it is wrong and cruel):

1, you have no tangible proof it was that cat (correct?)
2. It will not get you your money back.

So if you hurt this cat, what will you have gained? In the end you may have injured an innocent animal and that is not what I think you really want to do is it?

Edit:
I am assuming that yours is an outdoor cat? The safest thing to do is make him an indoor cat. Statistically, he will live considerably longer than outdoor cats. Most ferrel cats do not live past 2 years old and fall to some form of disease long before they get hit by a car or killed by a predator.

This has happened four times, now. The first three times I just paid the bill and let it go. However, it has happened twice in the last two months. Last Saturday morning, I heard a catfight and went out to my driveway. The neighbor's cat and mine were in a staredown on the driveway. A couple of days later my guy had soreness in his butt which developed into an absess. I think that's pretty solid circumstantial evidence. I just talked to local animal control and they suggested trapping the cat. I'm going to rent a trap and catch the little prick on my property and turn it over to animal control, which is more evidence. Let's see how my asshole neighbor likes paying to spring his cat out. And, everytime it's picked up, the price to get him out goes up. This is actually might be fun. Payback's a bitch. It's just another example of people refusing to take responsibility.

I would probably have let it go this time if the guy hadn't copped an attitude when I talked with him. He had the gall to tell me his cat had the right to go wherever it wanted. Wrong. Lesson time. Finally, I'm considering turning my guy into an inside cat.

Well, I set the trap this morning, but I didn't get him today. I'll reset it tomorrow morning. The animal control gal told me not to leave it out at night; if you get a racoon or a skunk they won't come out, it's your responsibilty to get rid of them. No thanks.

But, thanks to all for chiming in. Got a few laughs and some good ideas, not to mention the wizeass comments.

I do not think you should trap his cat, it has no real positive outcome.

Best scenario:
You trap it, he pays to bail the cat out and you feel a bit of revenge.

Bad scenario:
You trap it, he does not know or he does not care. The cat gets to live in the ASAPCA untill he gets put to sleep. And the cats only crime was he was a pet of an asshole.

Worst scenario:
You trap it, he pays to bail it out and seeks revenge now, and your guy pays the price.

I think you should just make you guy be an indoor cat, make sure he has pleanty of toys and things to climb like a cat condo, if he has goodies he will not be bored being in the house.

I know what your going through. My neighbors pitbull killed one of our Jack Russells last December and now another neighbor has 8 barking dogs that drive us crazy. We got a complaint form. We read through it and it turns out we can't do anything about it because it's within the same complex. Good luck with collecting for it. We are still waiting on compensation of our lovely Russell

Have a Decadent Dianne Day
