They tow the rides of illegals. Ever wonder why all over the state DUI checkpoints are always set up in arteries to or from largely latino neighborhoods. LE knows that they will get drivers who are not licensed. Therefore LE can tow the vehicle and sell it at auction. It's not about public safety and getting drunks off the road. It's about revenue for the city conducting the checkpoint.

Do a google search on DUI checkpoints and latino communities. This is a huge revenue stream for cities all over California. It's done elsewhere as well when the laws are written to allow theft from latinos. Of an if you're not latino driving without a license you're just shyt out of luck. Tow fees and the daily storage rate for the mandatory 30 days. Run the numbers at $30 to $50 a day times 30 days. See why the cars get sold?

Correct. Thanks to proposition 13, we don't have "law enforcement officers" in California, we have armed revenue collectors.

I agree with cops being armed revenue collectors, they were the same in Arizona too.....and I lived there for 5 years.

But you can hardly blame prop 13 for the current revenue problems with the government, prop 13 froze property taxes at 1976 or 78 levels, not sure which, for those who owned their homes at the time and froze them until they were sold, when the properties were sold, prop 13 was no longer valid.

Since a good portion of the homes in California have since been resold we can not blame anyone but the politicians in Sacramento for our budget woes.

Whichever though, Oakland sucks ass in its police. They are armed bullies and thugs.

Don't forget that Prop 13 also froze the property taxes on commercial properties, which get sold less frequently.. while the tenants may change, or the company may be sold, the property ownership doesn't change. As a result, there is a very large differential between actual property value, and assessed (and taxed) value.

tantivy is right. The real problem with 13 was the inclusion of commercial. On average residential ownership changes about every 7 years. But if you open the door to change you would need to trust the politicans - Ha

Prop. 13 is a god-send for our elders and most of them stay in their homes for many years. One of the great things about 13 is your property tax can only go up 2% a year. Prior to 13, property taxes here in Calif. would go up MUCH higher every year.

Yet as pointed out it has effectively shifted property taxes disproportionately onto residential property owners from commercial owners. The answer is to rescind the protections from Prop 13 of commercial property and have it rise and fall annually as it did previously. The elderly and others on a fixed income are then benefited without a free subsidy to business.
